Tune in Mudd Up! with DJ Rupture on WFMU tonight at 7PM, as Roberto Ernesto Gyemant aka DJ Beto, the man responsible for putting together those wonderful volumes of 1960s and ’70s “cumbia tropical & calypso funk” from Panama, joins Rupture to talk and share some incredible music (most likely some exclusives that are not included on the comps.) The compilations are released on Soundway Records.  I am especially looking forward to the talk and the music Beto is going to play for us. I have been fascinated with the music of Panama ever since our visit from Wayne Marshall and Raquel Z Revera. They highlighted the unique position of the Central American country and its lasting contribution and shaping of Reggaeton and our current urban soundscape.  (Missed it? It’s streaming here. Subscribe to the Mudd Up! podcast if you want downloadable versions of my weekly show: , Mudd Up! RSS. Listen, get involved, throw in comments, questions. Again, tonight @ 7PM.

Of course, for those outside our FM broadcast range, WFMU offers live streaming and even has its own free iPhone app!

For the last few months, Jahdan has been constantly, sonically bombing the internet with quality heat.  If you think the tracks on Bazooka Shot were crazy, just wait until you hear the album. Better yet, head over to iTunes, where you can preview and buy the first single from the album Buzzrock Warrior.  The single is called “She Said”and it features 77klash.  Jahdan’s voice is beautiful and pure on this one, but the beat and the bass are shifty, and Klash spits some cryptic, classic lines on this.  The album comes out September 15th (9/14 for those in the UK!), which is just around the corner. Get hustlin, get ready!

schlachthofbronx feat. slushpuppykids – belly full of pills mix

Schlachthofbronx are preparing to release their debut. In meantime, the Bavarian bounce developers link up with South African cribwalkers (them Slush Puppy Kids aka Spoek Mathambo + Big Space) to offer us an appetizer, a taste of what’s to come.  This mini-mix, which contains tracks from a forthcoming EP that drops before the album, is a dancefloor scorcher–extreme heat.

Gnonnas Pedro & His Dadjes Band – La Musica en Verité

This is from Analog Africa‘s latest compilation of incredible/obscure/forgotten 1970s West African dancefloor masterpieces Legends of Benin. We play sweet, deep throwbacks like this one every Monday 7PM to 8PM Mudd Up radio with DJ Rupture on WFMU 91.1 fm (listen from the archives)– stream, or get podcast. “La Musica en Verité” is the amazing closing track on Legends of Benin. It’s an inviting and inspiring jam, calling you, telling you to get on the floor and shake your bones a little before the party ends, but I’ll manage to squeeze it in among all the fresh, happening raps early @ NYT9 this Friday!

Maluca – El Tigeraso (Sabbo Remix)

Our favorite badman producer/DJ in Tel-Aviv, Sabbo unleashed a remix of Maluca’s new single “El Tigeraso” out on Mad Decent. I’ll cosign Sabbo’s comment about Maluca’s stage presence.  She performed the original at New York Tropical a few months ago, and practically shook the Glasslands with her intense, high-energy performance. Also, don’t forget to look for Sabbo’s It Is The Time.

NY Tropical 8 was a spectacular event. Special thanks to Zuzuka Poderosa and all those crazy dancers. Rupture, Shadetek, Geko blessed the crowd with some incredible sets— so solid, I wished I had recorded all their sets! This time, we are joined by some more incredible deejays and guests, from Rio to Oakland.  MAGA BO, live all the way from his base Rio de Janeiro, will be in the building serving up Transnational Bass and all sort of international heat.  DJ RIPLEY— “lifesaving whirlwind mistress of sonic devastation with hot sauce”– just back from that small, vibrant, and powerful island nation that is responsible for some much of the music we listen and dance to, is going to throw an early set which is guaranteed to to be fantastic— BE ON TIME, PEOPLE. We also have a special live appearance by RHIANNON (songstress from the Subatomic Soundsystem.) Matt Shadetek and I are holding things down for the fam.

This is part one of my tour of where I grew up in the Bronx and my process in creating the turntable science. Journalists get it correct, the dawn of Hip Hop was in the 70’s!!! Grandmaster Flash

transporte_lo

Last Tuesday, Akwaaba Music released Akwaaba Sem Transporte (stream the album on Fairtilizer here) – a kuduro compilation “straight from the source,” Luanda, Angola.  Akwaaba Music founder Benjamin Lebrave spent six weeks in Angola, earlier this year, gathering and licensing tracks from rappers and DJs, and the result is a raw,  authentic, high-energy dance comp. I’m aware that notions of authenticity, especially in the global ghetto-tech and nu whirled music (â„¢ wayne&wax) discourse is quite problematic – is the kuduro coming out of Lisbon/Europe any less authentic that what’s coming out of Luanda/Africa? European kuduro has definitely received and continue to receive more shine off late in Europe and America.

[audio:http://nyc.duttyartz.com/mp3s/DredManGi-NaoTaSeEntender.mp3]

Dred Man-Gi feat. Nell – Não Ta Se Entender

This one is weird, and probably the least danceable track on the compilation, but it’s the one I like best. Upbeat, yes –but with a fractured, heavy beat and a disruptive flow. The MP3 above is standard bit rate/128 – Head over to iTunes for better quality/320 kbps, so you can hear and enjoy all the bass and efx, and check out the rest of the comp, which is all very danceable– and Dutty Artz supports that kind of music!

Also, check out Ghetto Palms last week – Benjamin writes + Eddie blends.
