Fresh off playing out in Milan along with Venus X and many months flitting about the world Dutty Artz own Chief Boima rejoins us to make you sweat. This episode of the party we’re doing as a fundraiser to pay for a much overdue re-vamp of the Dutty Artz website. All you need to do is come and get drunker than you usually do and you’ll be contributing to a good cause. Myself Matt Shadetek, Atropolis, Taliesin and Lamin Fofana will soundtrack that for you.

We’re slothing out hard this Sweat Lodge with a special guest from Newark, New Jersey: DJ Sliink. Â Sliink is part of the prolific Brick Bandits Crew who have been carrying the torch for Jersey club music movement in fine style. Boima saw Sliink killing shit at SXSW this year and recommended that I invite him to Sweat Lodge and the rest will be history (soon!) Â He’ll be joined by yours truly (Matt Shadetek), Atropolis and Taliesin.
This month we’ve got an awesome guest who just re-landed in NYC after stints in Jamaica, San Francisco and many many places in between. Â DJ Ripley is a longtime friend of Dutty Artz and we’re super psyched to have her with us again. Â She’ll be joined by myself Matt Shadetek, Geko Jones and Lamin Fofana. Come sweat with us!
This February edition of Sweat Lodge we’ve got a special guest for Sweat Lodge all the way from Colombia by way of London. Â Isa GT has been a friend of the DA crew for a while now and making and releasing some awesome music. I first met her a few years ago at SXSW when she decided to jump on the mic and MC a little during my set at the Peligrosa / Tormenta Tropical party. It was outside on a patio and I played between Dubble Dutch and NguzuNguzu (before I knew DD!) and it was the first time I heard El Bebe Ambiente by NguzuNguzu. Suffice to say it was awesome and in the process Isa made a big impression on me with her personality. Actually here’s a picture, w/ everyone I mentioned plus Peligrosa madman and homie Orion. My arm looks like a weird snake but really that’s some historic shit right there. I’m happy to say we’ve connected the dots and here she is in NYC!
>>Â FACEBOOK RSVPÂ <<
Here’s a flavor of what she does, she’s going to do some performing and some DJing at the party.
“I’ve been listening to chicago trax, dance mania, ghetto tech all that for 15 years or so. Rashad is taking it up a level and reaching escape velocity, its more like Jungle in the way it floats. Really this stuff is practically Jungle but its totally Chicago. Juke has arrived” – Timeblind via Google+
He said it, I don’t have much to add expect that this shit is fuckin dope. The drop at around 2:03 really proves his point. I get that warm fuzzy I’m back in my jungle-raving-youth feeling. I saw Rashad on new year’s eve here in Brooklyn and he killed it. A really fun set. Overall a fun party actually, grimy warehouse illegal vibes in Bushwick. Shout out to Mike Q, Lit City, Whore House and Cunt Mafia for that. I danced my ass off.
Realness seems to be making a come back in Brooklyn. Exhibit A: Troy Ave aka Harry Powder. There’s a few rappers popping up on my radar from NYC lately that are piquing my interest and Troy Ave is one of them. He’s coming with some hard non-retro BK drug dealer rap. I’m on board.
2012 is here.  While we’re all waiting for the mayan clock to tick over and usher in either the apocalypse or the dawn of a wonderful new era I suggest you get your mind right with the spirit world.  The spirits in question here are those concerned with getting drunk, dancing your ass off and sweating out a year worth of ghouls and goblins. ˙∆ INFOS ∆˙ DUTTY ARTZ SWEAT LODGE DJs: Geko Jones Matt Shadetek Atropolis Lamin Fofana Taliesin   Friday Jan 6th 10PM-4AM $$ FREE $$ ADMISSION at The Cove, 108 N. 6th St, Brooklyn NY.  Take the L train to Bedford or G to Lorimer and walk.  >> RSVP ON FACEBOOK <<
This month Sweat Lodge is falling a week later than usual on Friday 12/16. Â Our good friends over at Turrbotax asked us for a date swap and we were happy to oblige! Â This month our guest is Jubilee, a long time friend of Dutty Artz. Â I’ve been wanting to get her to play Sweat Lodge but what with her hectic touring schedule and all was never able to make it happen… Till now! Â She’ll be supported by your handsome residents Matt Shadetek (me), Chief Boima, Lamin Fofana and Taliesin. Â It should be a lively affair.

Since you all loved up that last footwork / juke post I made I figured I’d share a video piece that Wills Glasspiegel who did the audio I posted did, I assume on the same trip to Chicago. Â Some of the material is the same but since it’s about dancing the visual is pretty key: watch those feet work!
Also Wills was nice enough to make the audio in the original post (below) downloadable for those of you who requested it for your filez.
Also Traxman who’s in the piece will be playing in NYC this Friday at an underground party at an undisclosed location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Â Also Total Freedom from LA! Â Looks like there will be some footwork dancers there too. Â Shout to Azizaman for putting it together, looks dope. Â FB event here w/ info.
I am not involved with this but am showing it a bit of promo love because I remember what it was like trying to bring Grime artists to NYC when no one knew what it was but I just loved this new crazy music and wanted to share. Â It ain’t easy! If you like this kind of stuff vote with your dancing feet.
Marvin’s Room (Shlohmo’s thru tha floor remix) – Drake by shlohmoA question I hear frequently asked about Toronto based Hiphop/RnB rapper/singer/child actor Drake in the press is why his new music is so depressing sounding and what does he have to be unhappy about? He’s young, rich and famous! He’s got a seemingly endless supply of adoring fans, pretty women, drugs, alcohol, money and a venue for his artistic expression to talk about his feelings. Hot97 is his psychotherapy couch.
When he sings: ‘Cups of the XO
Bitches in my old phone
I should call one and go home
I’ve been in this club too long
The woman that I would try
Is happy with a good guy
But I’ve been drinking so much That I’ma call her anyway and say “F-ck that nigga that you love so bad I know you still think about the times we had†I say “f-ck that nigga that you think you found And since you picked up I know he’s not aroundâ€
(Are you drunk right now?)
I’m just sayin’, you could do better Tell me have you heard that lately? I’m just sayin’ you could do better And I’ll start hatin’, only if you make me’
Drake strikes me as being honest here. Even though he has all of the above material and ego-enhancing things that many of us want, he is still not happy. Â When artists are honest and speak about what’s really happening with them instead of repeating tropes that seem like the ‘industry standard’ (I’m balling! I’m awesome! I’m getting money!) it adds a richness of meaning, the texture of personal reality. Â The current vogue for sipping XO (aka sizzurp, purple drank, or cough syrup made with promethazine and codeine) popularized by many rap/rnb artists including recently Drake and The Weeknd seems to support this pretty well. Codeine is an opiate, the same active ingredient found in heroin. It’s a central nervous system depressant that makes you sleepy and dulls pain when used when you’re sick. If consumed when you’re healthy it pushes pleasure buttons in your brain and feels great. Â Taking codeine also kills you. Â If you slow your central nervous system down enough you’ll just stop breathing. RIP DJ Screw and Pimp C. My question is: how much must you be suffering to make this glamourous lifestyle choice? Scientific research has pointed to links between the way we experience physical and psychic pain, like the pain of depression, including the fact that depression sufferers seem to have more acute physical pain. Â As far as I can tell people who are happy and fulfilled don’t need to constantly take large amounts of central nervous system depressants like codeine and alcohol.
Wills Glassspiegel sent me this after I ran into him on the street and remarked how much I enjoyed the radio broadcast he worked on for Afropop about the black American roots of house and techno here.
I’ll let him speak:
“Thought you and Dutty Artz might be interested in this interview tape I recorded in Chicago with Traxman, RP Boo, DJ Earl and Boylan. I think everyone has been trying to describe “footwork” and no one quite gets to it like these guys. In publishing this tape (which i did with their permsision), I was reminded of Lomax’s old oral history interviews with blues musicians. So important for musicians to tell their own stories.”
Yup, I agree. I always prefer to listen to music talk about their own work and scenes as opposed to various usually distant journalistic interpreters. Listen, learn and enjoy.
I am playing early at Zablonskis on 11/11/11 (magic date) along with lots of others DJs I love for the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival curated by Mean Red.
ZABLOSKIS:
10pm-11pmMatt Shadetek
11pm-12am Shawn Reynaldo
12am-1am Dre Skull
1am-2am Dubbel Dutch
2am -3am Schlachthofbronx
3am -4am NIKKO
But I will also be opening for Kraak and Smaak at Drom on Thursday AND at the studio at Webster Hall on Saturday w/ my friend DJ Kiva. Lots of great music!
To celebrate our ongoing monthly Sweat Lodge party series at The Cove in Brooklyn (next edition next Friday Nov. 4th! info below) and to give all you unfortunates who haven’t been able to attend yet a taste of the magic I’ve recorded a new DJ mix. Â It’s mixed live on Serato Itch which is something new I’ve been trying out – button pushing based DJing instead of vinyl control records – and I had a lot of fun creating it. Â There are some mistakes and in the spirit of human imperfection and because I’m too lazy to edit them out I left them in. Â It’s kind of representative of the drunk madness that goes down at Sweat Lodge anyway. Â Although I was not drunk when I recorded this I swear. Â The focus is on the Dutty Artz fam and catalog with a bunch of new and unreleased tunes and remixes from the crew. Â Enjoy!

SWEAT LODGE PROMO VIDEO:
Filmed by Atropolis and edited by Erik Marika Rich:
Fellow native new yorker (Bronx stand up!) and expert cutter-through-of-smoke-mirrors Noam Chomsky gave this talk in April 2011 while the currently flourishing #occupy movements were just a gnawing sense of horrific injustice in the occupiers bellies.
In it he breaks down such popular topics as:
1) Why economic power = political power
2) How financial regulations were systematically demolished in this country to benefit the 1% ending a ‘golden era’ of egalitarian prosperity
3) How Obama was bought by Wall Street and how he repaid them
He forgot his notes at the hotel and so it’s light on statistics and heaaaavy on truthy goodness. Â Need to explain to your friends why the Occupy Wall St movement matters at your next cocktail party? Â Start here.

Big shout out to PDX Justice for filming and posting this on Vimeo, along with The Collins Distinguished Speaker Series and the Department of English of the University of Oregon at Eugene for holding the event. Â If I get a free hour I’d like to rip the audio for this and encode it as a podcast. Â If anyone else is motivated to do it first we’ll happily host and promote it here. Â The fact that this thing is so relevant to the current conversation and only had 636 views when I found it is terrible.
