This past week, during our West Coast tour, Matt and I spent a significant amount of time hanging with Tendai Maraire of Shabazz Palaces at his home in South Seattle. He was a great host and seems to know everyone around town, so we got an impressive tour of Seattle’s cultural history and local music scene. One of the highlights of the week was being able to check Tendai’s proteges Malitia Malimob perform live at our gig at The Crocodile in Seattle:

We were thoroughly impressed by the enthusiastic reaction from the local crowd of mostly young Somali kids who “moshed“, threw up their M’s, and enthusiastically sang along throughout the group’s set. As I was djing a warm up set of mostly commercial rap, 5 minutes before Malimob were slated to come on one enthusiastic fan amusingly approached me to ask if I had any Malimob. I suppose he just couldn’t wait!
Dutty Artz is proud to premiere Malitia Malimob’s latest video for their song “Thomas Hagan” from their EP the Idi Amin Project. This also allows us to take the opportunity to officially announce a partnership between Tendai’s Maraire Enterprises and Dutty Artz to present Malitia Malimob to the world!

This partnership continues a collaboration that Tendai and I began last year, when we worked together on a mixtape for his Chimurenga Renaissance project. Expect similar collaborations to come out of our working with Malitia Malimob.

So disappointed in the relentless cussing, misogyny, nihilism – and I’m a bleeding heart liberal.
What do you say to folks who’ve got impressionable youngstas to bring up? Who knows if the guy says anything worth listening to when it’s so covered in profanity.
How is this different to the Def Jam Cheef Keef / Lil Reese bullshit?
You Yanks. Keepin it real I guess. Yo.
To folks who’ve got impressionable youngstas to bring up I’d say, “keep doing a good job caring what they’re exposed to, because not all youngstas have parents who do.”
Here’s my long form response tho:
