The Jazz Museum of Harlem has an exhibit up on Ralph Ellison’s record collection, and a few weeks ago Scheme and I went by to check it out. Before I went, I caught Richard Brody’s piece about the collection which sparked a lot of thoughts, I’ll try to weave them together below. (more…)

Aspiring jazz musicians are brought up to believe that DJs are the enemies of ‘real’ musicians. The logic being that people who play real instruments are loosing all their gigs to these interlopers that just play their favorite tunes all night.
