Mickey finished his long awaited debut album The Achievement, and it’s coming out later this fall. The project previously referred to as The New Museum – a better album title – but a lot has happened since 2008 – some decent mixtapes and leaks, a Honda commercial, etc. “Paradise”, produced by Harlem’s own Precize, is queasy and there’s a nervousness about the whole thing, but it’s enjoyable.

Earlier this afternoon, the good folks over at XLR8R liberated a track “iHop” from Flowers, Matt Shadetek’s first solo instrumental album which drops June 8th – just a couple of weeks from now. This will be the first time we announce the album on this blog! Friday and Saturday, May 21 & and 22, starting at 8pm, Award-winning New York-based Zimbabwean contemporary dance artist and choreographer Nora Chipaumire will be teaming up with musician Thomas Mapfumo — the legendary “Lion of Zimbabwe” — for the New York premiere of lions will roar, swans will fly, angels will wrestle heaven, rains will break: gukurahundi at the Kumble Theater at Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus. Along with the live musical acompaniment by the great Thomas Mapfumo & The Blacks Unlimited, dancer Souleymane Badolo will also join Chipaumire for the performance.

We have a pair of tickets to give a way to the performance on Saturday. The first reader to respond to the question by sending an email with the correct answer to family@duttyartz.com (and make sure you include the word contest in the subject line) wins the pair of tickets.

Today, from 3pm to 6pm, I’ll be playing tunes on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org – essentially taking over the airwaves for three hours!

Tune in! modesty aside, I have an incredible amount of extremely good music to share & I’ll be as organized as possible, but it’s going to be eclectic and heavy! Expect crazy heat, everything from Busy Signal to Mosca, to Aby Ngana Diop to Jack Rose!

& of course, stay tune for Mudd Up! with DJ Rupture 7 – 8 pm – our regular, reliable hour of undeniable heat and pressure every week!

Aidonia – Heart is Hers (feat. Aisha Davis)

I haven’t heard that many tracks from Aidonia; he’s one of those mid to late ’00s dancehall artists you hear about all the time, see his name on countless mixtapes, and probably already heard a bunch of his tunes at parties, but you never actually went out of your way and check for his tunes. That’s until I heard the title cut from Stephen “Di Genius” Mcgregor’s incredible Bad People riddim which completely shifted my view on a couple of vocalists — but more on that shortly.  “Heart Is Hers” features Aisha Davis and is produced by Equiknoxx producer/artist collective (who are also responsible producing another impressive Aidonia track titled “Negative.”) This is what dancehall sounds like in post-808s & Heartbreak/weird-emotional-electro-pop-hop era? Dancehall is going in so many different, exciting directions at the moment, and as for this particular type of sound which has been bubbling for the last few years I think it’s safe to point to  T-Wayne & Yeezy as references.  As Aidonia sings – “Song is too dead/it needs more life – Needs a faster melody/more melody/groove your body…”

Empress I-Klass – With You (prod. by Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor)

“Amazing reggae flavored harmonies & hotness to warm up the radio & airwaves”

Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor produced the riddim for “With You” — can someone please identify that riddim? Empress I-Klass is a Boston based singer – born of Antiguan heritage. She has been around since the late 1980s performing and singing lead and background vocals in various bands here in the States and in the Caribbean Islands. She opened for Freddy McGregor in Boston in June 2006.

Techno Rumba is Boima’s elegant and fresh take on Afrobeat and contemporary African dance music. This Saturday Jace/rupture (DUTTY ARTZ) and Mitch McEwen (SUPERFRONT) are hosting a discussion panel on Do-It-Yourself Public Space Making at SUPERFRONT’s Brooklyn storefront gallery. The event is second in a series that leads up to the construction of a public space in the backyard of the gallery. Panelists include Cristina Goberna (Fake Industries | Architectural Agonism), Justin Moore, (New York City Planning, Brooklyn), Ena McPherson (Parks, Arts & Culture, Community Board 3), Jordan Seiler (New York Street Advertising Takeover).

Choose to participate in 1 of 3 teach-ins after the panel: 1) community zoning basics 2) spring gardening tactics 3) property disobedience and public dialogue.

April 10: Mixtape on DIY Public Space Makers 4pm – 6pm *plus* Opening Reception for SUPERHERO 6pm – 8pm

$5 suggested donation for the 4pm panel and workshops, but no one turned away.

The Mixtape will run from 4pm to around 6pm.

This event is part of the Cypher on Urban Affairs, a public program at SUPERFRONT partly funded by the Brooklyn Arts Council.
