They say: “DJ Rupture will be joining residents Gregzinho and Juanderful for Philly’s only night of dembows mashed up with folk tunes, crunked out cumbia, dancehall mania en español, coupé décale collides with hip-hop, Carnival mass hysteria, kuduro avec grande vitesse, soca-fied funky house.”

My first appearance on U.S. TV and I’m speakin’ Spanish! Welcome to the 21st ct., amigos. Gonna throw a tea party to celebrate, tod@s estan invitad@s. #DemographicWarfare

THE DUTTY ARTZ GROUP: GUIDLINES TO CONSIDER WHEN TERMINATING A DJ
Soundboy Murderation Part 3

Dutty Artz’s first two articles on termination guidelines can be found on this Dutty Artz blog site, which you can link to here: https://duttyartz.com/

In a previous Dutty Artz series of articles we discussed things to consider when you are considering DJ termination. We presented ideas on what Dutty Artz consultants recommend to Dutty Artz clients on this matter. In this new series we are covering guidelines to bear in mind once you have actually decided to terminate the DJ under consideration. These are guidelines that Dutty Artz consultants go over with their Dutty Artz clients, especially clients new to the Dutty Artz program.

As previously noted, all of this information can be found in Dutty Artz Group’s copyrighted Job Description and Office Policy Manual that all new Dutty Artz clients receive as part of their Dutty Artz program. The Dutty Artz Group’s 400 plus page manual can be easily edited for any office and is something all Dutty Artz consultants ensure is implemented with Dutty Artz clients. In today’s litigious world, having proper policies in place, and following them, is vitally important.

Here are several more guidelines to keep in mind when discharging a DJ:

o When the DJ Begs: If an DJ begs for a second chance, you have got to be tough. Be willing to explain things but don’t give the slightest indication that you are flexible in your decision.

o Arguing the Reasons: Don’t argue with the DJ. Indicate that you have the specific documentation supporting the decision. On the other hand, if the DJ’s argument convinces you that something has been overlooked, indicate you will check it out as quickly as possible and do so.

We will present more guidelines for termination in upcoming Dutty Artz blogs.

Dutty Artz family member and general superstar Rocio Rodriguez Salceda has her debut solo show in New York City, opening this Thursday at Caption Gallery in DUMBO.

art-fight

The show contains photographs and an animation. The photographs inhabit a provocative space between psychological portraiture, fashion, and creepyland. Powerful! “Though Rodríguez Salceda ultimately blacks out the individual faces of her models, a gesture that lends them both anonymity and universality, all of the women that she picks as subjects are close friends, often artists or performers themselves. Taking stereotypical ideas of femininity as her jumping off point, Rodríguez Salceda proposes a psychological alter ego for each model…”

Join us at the opening this Thursday! It’s open gallery night across DUMBO and in the building at Water St., so there’s much to see.

Caption Gallery is pleased to present Art Fight,
an exhibition of new work by Rocío Rodríguez Salceda.

Opening Reception October 7th, 6:00-8:00pm

Omega El Fuerte running things in Washington Heights last night.omega-gif

The great thing about Omega fandom is that it requires no explanation. Either you haven’t heard of him (in which case, read the Omega profile I wrote for The Fader last summer) or you have, and his bad-assness is utterly self-evident. It’s simple: this former reggaeton choreographer is “El Fuerte”, one of the best musicians around in any genre right now, period, the undisputed dark king of Dominican merengue urbano / mambo. Plus he’s kinda scary – we’re not fooled just because he dropped the “y su Mambo Violento” from his name. (When you find an Omega fan, ask ’em about Rita Indiana — they’ll have an opinion on her too.)

Omega El Fuerte plays twice this weekend in NYC – as I tweeted: “all NYC’s latin ‘cosmopolatino’ websites that *didnt* mention OMEGA’s gigs here this weekend: #FAIL” ….

Neofuturism and the Economy of Affect, a Noise Primer for Nueva York.
Or, Why Are We Working For Free?

I meant to say: 11 years ago I did this Welmo remix and someone just took the time to upload it to YouTube along with a pic of kids sniffing glue. Or inhaling goldfish. The song is Pre-Tropical anti-cop anti-gunman Spanish language rapping with a piano, and wikipedia tells me that I can add proto-breakcore or salsa-edits to the list. I was living in the future back then; I still am. The future is incredibly humid, even in October. Not much works here, including me. The distractions are draining but fabulous, even better than the sunsets in White Noise. I think the guy who posted my song is Polish. I love you all just not evenly. Remind me to sell a version of 4’33 on iTunes.

Before, the advertisers had to guess; now, with all the information we provide with keyword searches, on social networks, and in emails, advertising can be more precise. On top of that, the “content” of social networks, email, search engines, blogs—it somehow magically produces itself, that is to say the users produce it, that is to say it’s free. The extension of advertising to the domain of private chatter undermines the competitiveness of anything that costs more than private chatter to produce. Marx blamed the below-subsistence wages of the proletariat on the reserve army of labor; the below-subsistence revenues of the Times can be blamed on the reserve army of the social networks. . . Today we Google ourselves to see what the world knows about us; tomorrow we’ll just watch the ads.

I will elaborate on this later — right now I’m working with Sonido Martines on an organic farm in south Netherlands — but in the meantime, go get The Fader’s Fall Issue, which contains my feature on Tribal Guarachero, researched over the course of a few weeks in Monterrey/Mexico, with excellent photos by the intrepid John Francis Peters. John just upped the images on his website (although you’ll need to get the magazine to see the spread in its full-color, full-size glory).

Also: everybody who reads this should go visit Mexico, you will fall in love with the country as it is continually mind-blowing! And: we’ve got high-quality exclusive content related to my #3Ball MTY essay coming up soon on Fader blog, so preparate… (& you heard Erick Rincon’s tribal guarachero remix of a Scandinavian folk tune, right?)

Over at Mudd Up!, An Eid al-Fitr inspired post of songs from Yemen, Morocco, Algeria, and Spain. Including this recent Moroccan chaabi. Got this last January in Barcelona; the guy burned me a CD-r of tunes sans meta-data… It’s a stormer though! Performed live, crowd cheers included:

Mudd Unknown – Moroccan chaabi excerpt

Yesterday I made the mistake of walking by the World Trade Center site – the crazies were already out! Already basking in media attention. Anyhow, music remains a gift and refuge: head here for more.

Yeah yeah, this happened last year. But I didn’t blog about it. And since today is 9/02/10…

Here’s what Tripwire said:

Last night on 90210, when explaining why he and his girlfriend are made for each other, the character played by Tristan Wilds (the dude from the fourth season of The Wire) says, “WE BOTH LIKE DJ /RUPTURE.” WHATTT! Either the screenwriter was consulting Wilds as to what DJs he’s into, or the screenwriter was like “OH YEAH DUH, PRIVILEGED BEVERLY HILLS TEENS ARE TOTALLY, TOTALLY INTO GUARACHERO AND CUMBIA!” Maybe they have better taste than we thought? We’re pulling for a guest appearance next. We’ve already written the plot: So the girl he’s dating finds out that he’s still in high school (she’s an older woman) and dumps him because, ew. But then they GO to a DJ /Rupture gig (one where he’s DJing all obscure dancehall maybe), they meet him and he gives them sagely advice about how age ain’t nothin but a number, and they get back together. COME ON! Watch the show after the jump… the moment comes at about 12:40 in a beach scene.

Yesterday’s guest mix & interview by The Sick Girl(s) was excellent thumping late-summer fun, and I’m pleased to announce that on Monday September 13th, I’ll have South African boy wonder Spoek Mathambo live in-studio on WFMU 91.1 FM! Us black internationals gonna throw an on-air Tea Party.

I first encountered Spoek as part of Sweat X, his duo project that I wrote about for Fader’s Africa issue [PDF] two years back. That piece involved a lively interview and allowed me to get the following sentence into print: “Spoek Mathambo is a slippery post-Apartheid glam-rap prince from Soweto who is descended from distant African royalty, or Jewish, or both.”

Since then Spoek has been making steady moves for world domination, rapping, singing, sending me emails about mythical dinosaurs that can stop the flow of a river (and concept band/videos based on same), generally manifesting polyglot amazingness in all sorts of places (Johannesburg, Stockholm, Mrs Internet, Paris, Twitter), and, finally, AMERIKKKA, the country with the best hamburgers & weapons. Although I do love the gun-fetish object on Mshini Wam’s cover:

spoek-mshini wam cover

So. We welcome him to our strange land with open arms. Fader is streaming his album for the rest of today, and we can watch these 2 videos to get some angles into Mr Mathambo’s complex musical visions… (HINT: the damaged Joy Division cover I’ve been playing out since Pitchfork festival last summer is 100% Spoek…. he’s lost control…)

[The Sick Girls: A & J, pic by Push It]

Last I heard, the cost of living in Berlin was 1/4th that of New York City. Let’s think about that. You stop working in New York, buy a plane ticket, and can go there and stretch out your life for an entire season – spending roughly the equivalent of one NYC-month. True, the 1/4th thing was back when the euro was higher, but still…. Berlin exists as an alternate universe, where, despite the influx of cool tourists, the price of everything from coal-heated apartments to MDMA (so they tell me) remains very affordable. Plus it’s deliciously leafy and quiet and healthy, wide avenues and canals, if you want that. (Also: Turkish music! Let’s save that for another post.)

“Techno” famously rules within this alternate universe – one of my friends wakes up at 10am on Sundays to go dancing at one of those parties which hasn’t stopped since Friday night: she treats it as surreal morning exercise – so by playing crunked-up (non-techno) fantastic music and throwing a zuper party called Revolution no. 5 the Sick Girls are like rulers of an utopia moment within an alternate universe, which makes them superheros in our vaguely real world (and among its crowds of virtual doppelgängers). Which they are visiting tonight…

This is a roundabout way of saying: Jay-Oh, 1/2 of The Sick Girls, will be my special guest on today’s radio show. Berlin’s finest!

jay-oh

[Jay-Oh and someone’s sneaker]

Jay-Oh will do a live mix and talk about Berlin’s musical climate, the upcoming Sick Girls compilation album, testosterone’s impact on club microgenres, promoting events versus producing beats, and, if we’re nice, we’ll get to hear some unreleased tunes from them…

Key Phrases: sick tricks, urban bass, scented revolution.

Note: the Sick Girl’s compilation will be released this fall on BBE Records, which is the same label putting out Fader coverboy Spoek Mathambo’s debut album. ‘Post-Apartheid post-hiphop posterboy’ Spoek will be my next WFMU guest, joining us live in-studio on September 13th.

So. Mark yr calendars, subscribe to the podcast (regular XML | iTunes), and tune in tonight, live 7-8pm, on WFMU 91.1FM. Nouveau Yorque, the city with the biggest rats.
