Got an email yesterday from my friend Samira out in the Bay – tipping me off to a new EP by The Narcicyst. I’ve been a fan of the Montreal-based rapper since I saw the comedic (and super real) opening for P.H.A.T.W.A., and he was my number-one wish list choice to headline the Beyond the Block festival in the summer of 2012 (although that didn’t happen.) Well, “Narcy is back with his latest EP ‘We Are The Medium’, his take on technology and music, spirit and creativity,” and it’s sounding pretty good!
The EP shows continued development as rapper, and continued dedication to critical media analysis and activism. I’m always fond of artists – especially inherently global ones – with a local awareness built into their work. His connection to Canada shines through on the EP’s collaborations, notably with powerhouse DJ crew (and homies) A Tribe Called Red. He also enlists the help of Montreal-based African-mixed-Berber heritaged MC Meryem Saci, for ‘Average Type,’ the lead video off the EP. Vibe out as you absorb all the messages!
