Aidonia – Heart is Hers (feat. Aisha Davis)

I haven’t heard that many tracks from Aidonia; he’s one of those mid to late ’00s dancehall artists you hear about all the time, see his name on countless mixtapes, and probably already heard a bunch of his tunes at parties, but you never actually went out of your way and check for his tunes. That’s until I heard the title cut from Stephen “Di Genius” Mcgregor’s incredible Bad People riddim which completely shifted my view on a couple of vocalists — but more on that shortly.  “Heart Is Hers” features Aisha Davis and is produced by Equiknoxx producer/artist collective (who are also responsible producing another impressive Aidonia track titled “Negative.”) This is what dancehall sounds like in post-808s & Heartbreak/weird-emotional-electro-pop-hop era? Dancehall is going in so many different, exciting directions at the moment, and as for this particular type of sound which has been bubbling for the last few years I think it’s safe to point to  T-Wayne & Yeezy as references.  As Aidonia sings – “Song is too dead/it needs more life – Needs a faster melody/more melody/groove your body…”

Here are some photos from Tormenta Tropical at SXSW. I don’t have time to write a long post but suffice to say I was honored to play with all these great people and have such a great party. You are all legendary and I love you. Photos by El Subcomandante Quito, full album here.

I can’t believe I missed this phenomenal banger from Quik and Kurupt… I guess singles culture kept me from listening to all of BlaQKout… BUT DAMN!!

If your feeling like getting out on Friday in NYC- Mosholu Park, Tombs and myself will be tearing up one very small part of the massive FLUX FACTORY space up in Queens. I used to live in the old space they had- and they KNOW how to throw a party.  NES.Avi will be on live video duties – even if we wern’t gonna be there this party would be fucking insane. Sticky‘s “Jumeirah Riddim” has been out for some time. It is a massive tune that has appeared on several dope funky mixes.  This Natalie Storm version titled “Look Pon Me” is simply undeniable – sweet, catchy bashment/funky monster.  & don’t sleep, look for the 12″ out on Mixpak – it boasts a Dexplicit remix, guaranteed heat!

schlachthofbronx feat. slushpuppykids – belly full of pills mix

Schlachthofbronx are preparing to release their debut. In meantime, the Bavarian bounce developers link up with South African cribwalkers (them Slush Puppy Kids aka Spoek Mathambo + Big Space) to offer us an appetizer, a taste of what’s to come.  This mini-mix, which contains tracks from a forthcoming EP that drops before the album, is a dancefloor scorcher–extreme heat.

Eve – Me-n-My (Up In The Club) (Produced by Benga and Salaam Remi)

The original beat is “E Trips” from Benga‘s 2008 album Diary of An Afro Warrior. Salaam Remi is known as Nasir Jones’ beat supplier, essentially his main/most consistent producer for the better half of this decade. Salaam links Benga and Eve together, slightly altering and reworking Benga’s beat for Eve‘s voice.  It’s a perfect connection, and the result is great… but I remain a bit ambivalent for some reason. Anyway, this is the first leak (that’s what we call singles nowadays) from her long overdue album now titled Flirt.

this one should be fun… i can vouch that Matt & I have a bunch of new remixes and exclusive tunes to run, Gex & Lamin always bring it, and Zuzuka is meant to be a firecracker.

Dutty (and cheap-$5 early) tropikkkal fun on the edge of Brooklyn, sound enhanced by Grimm’s reggae bassbins.

let the CIA know yr coming by hitting Facebook.

BLACK STARS BRING SUMMER HEAT…

DVA – Bullet A Go Gly (featuring Badness, Riko, Flowdan, and Killer P)

Major new, buyable 12″/mp3 release from Keysound Recordings. DVA keeps it raw and defiant, and all the MCs here are extra tuff.  I just can’t tell you how great I think this is right now, but I’ll try.  It is just perfect, extremely exciting, and aggressive grime we just can’t get enough of.  The release also contains an excellent remix from Dusk + Blackdown.

P Money and ??? – Fruit & Veg (DigitalRip)

Another amazing tune – this one is tough, but also quite funny at the same time.  The audio quality is poor, but the jam knocks hard regardless.  In a very tense atmosphere constructed by the producer (whose name we don’t know), two MCs (P Money and and another MC whose name we don’t know either) throw insults and accusations at apples, mangos, oranges, peas, carrots, broccolis, etc.  The attacks and accusations are particularly vicious, especially the ones directed at grapes and berries. (more…)

dutty artz ny tropical

New York Tropical is exactly a week from today! Check the flyer – we are designers, you already know. To get ready, I have put a podcast together containing mostly women voices over beats and sounds composed by men. I wasn’t specifically looking for female voices on male constructed instrumentals, it just happened most of the tracks I gather are refixes and songs with women voices recorded by gentlemen producers (I was tempted to call this Women… In The Vicinity Of Men. Thankfully, I settled on Mousso.  We need some more gyals in here… too many man, too many, many man!

I was going to post the tracklist a little later but we all know how Björk feels about writers not giving credits, so here it is –

Oumou Sangaré – Dugu Kamelemba
Björk – Nattura (Switch Refix)
Geiom featuring Marita – Reminissin’ (Shackleton Refix)
Amadou & Mariam – Sabali
Taken By Trees – The Sweetness of Air France
Dirty Projectors – Stillness Is The Move
Various Production – Deadman (Milanese Remix)
Filastine featuring Jessika Skeletalia Kenney – Fitnah
Love Joys – Stranger
Tanya Stephens – It’s A Pity
TOTAL FREEDOM and NGUZUNGUZU – Total Ciara (Like You Refix)
Matt Shadetek – (Tanya Stephens) Can’t Breathe Remix
Nicki Minaj – Beam Me Up Scotty
Uproot Andy – El Botellón Remix

If you missed the insanity that was Demolition- Rob from Pollinate was dropping a sick Tribal Guarachero set to a very receptive crowd-  you’ve got another chance to act like you know!
HardKnock

No kidding!  Thanks to all who came out to New York Tropical 5 to see Uproot Andy, Geko, me and Maluca.  It was a lot of fun.  Maluca killed it, super energy and the people loved it.  Here are some pics from the night.  This month we’ll be back at Glasslands on Friday May 29th doin’ it again, flier and info very soon.

Tomorrow Night THURSDAY April 30th @ APT

We got a call from Disco Shawn from Bersa Discos/Tormenta Tropical and he’ll be throwing down with us at APT tomorrow longside Uproot Andy, myself and N-Ron Hubbard.

Now about 3 weeks back I got an email from Toy Selectah and he asked me to throw up his MEXMORE LP but I got distracted in getting ready for my vacation.

If you didn’t catch it on some of the other blogs by now then its my fault you haven’t heard this yet, and I take responsibility for not having given you the opportunity to look cooler just by telling your friends about it. Now when you tell them, you can also collect bonus points for telling them how they too can get their pura crema on right here inna NYC June 4th!!
