Schlachthofbronx are preparing to release their debut. In meantime, the Bavarian bounce developers link up with South African cribwalkers (them Slush Puppy Kids aka Spoek Mathambo + Big Space) to offer us an appetizer, a taste of what’s to come. This mini-mix, which contains tracks from a forthcoming EP that drops before the album, is a dancefloor scorcher–extreme heat.

This is from Analog Africa‘s latest compilation of incredible/obscure/forgotten 1970s West African dancefloor masterpieces Legends of Benin. We play sweet, deep throwbacks like this one every Monday 7PM to 8PM Mudd Up radio with DJ Rupture on WFMU 91.1 fm (listen from the archives)– stream, or get podcast. “La Musica en VeriteÌ” is the amazing closing track on Legends of Benin. It’s an inviting and inspiring jam, calling you, telling you to get on the floor and shake your bones a little before the party ends, but I’ll manage to squeeze it in among all the fresh, happening raps early @ NYT9 this Friday!

Last Tuesday, Akwaaba Music released Akwaaba Sem Transporte (stream the album on Fairtilizer here) – a kuduro compilation “straight from the source,” Luanda, Angola. Akwaaba Music founder Benjamin Lebrave spent six weeks in Angola, earlier this year, gathering and licensing tracks from rappers and DJs, and the result is a raw, authentic, high-energy dance comp. I’m aware that notions of authenticity, especially in the global ghetto-tech and nu whirled music (â„¢ wayne&wax) discourse is quite problematic – is the kuduro coming out of Lisbon/Europe any less authentic that what’s coming out of Luanda/Africa? European kuduro has definitely received and continue to receive more shine off late in Europe and America.

This one is weird, and probably the least danceable track on the compilation, but it’s the one I like best. Upbeat, yes –but with a fractured, heavy beat and a disruptive flow. The MP3 above is standard bit rate/128 – Head over to iTunes for better quality/320 kbps, so you can hear and enjoy all the bass and efx, and check out the rest of the comp, which is all very danceable– and Dutty Artz supports that kind of music!

Early on this year, Wayne (you already know – wayneandwax.com) introduced us to Skeat’s “Dumelang” – a jam which I think gets played at every New York Tropical, and I’ve heard Geko Jones and Uproot Andy played it several times at Que Bajo?! and other parties, and needless to say, it destroys the dance every time. Big up Wayne & Botswana’s Ruff Riddims for unleashing that, and this “brand new dirrty south african hip-hop” by Double Jay.

Sabbo – Far To Go (feat. Little X)
The Chief put me on Sabbo while he was here a couple of weeks ago. Sabbo is a producer and DJ based in Tel-Aviv, making solid bass-heavy music and collaborating with actual Jamaican dancehall and reggae artists. “Far to Go” is from his new release It Is The Time, an EP which is out now digitally (vinyl coming next month.) All 4 tracks on the EP are remarkable, but “Far to Go” is what I’ve kept on repeat for the past week or so. The other three tracks, include vocal contributions from Jah Earth, Jah Rightful, and Chicago’s Zulu, are fully written, realized songs with verses, choruses, etc., whereas “Far to Go” contains only five lines and some chants from the vocalist Little X. Sabbo stretched and enhanced those five lines and adlibs with his programming, a wicked rhythm track and some sick synths and effects.

Petrona Martinez – La Vida Vale La Pena
Petrona Martinez inherited a strong singer’s tradition from Bullerengue, an Afro-Colombian dance rhythm born during the African fight for freedom from slavery and originally sung solely by pregnant women confined to their homes and thus unable to attend village dances. The melodies were passed down through the generations. She learned them from her grandmother and great-grandmother as they sang while doing daily tasks and attending Patron Saints Festivals. She is now passing them to her sons and daughters…
Uproot Andy was inspired and made a great version of the song (especially sharp and on point – always kills the dance!) This was released by Bersa Discos and buyable here. I was going to post this prior to last Thursday’s megaparty, but here it is now –

Jahdan Blakkamoore – Never Gonna Stop (produced by Matt Shadetek & DJ /rupture)
from BAZOOKA SHOT mixtape, which is coming next week. Jahdan sounds incredible, and very smooth. Matt & Jace are on some old skool grime ting w/ this riddim. Some of the elements in it reminded me of Eskiboy around 2003-05. The tune also has a great slow down dancehall grind, lighters in the air vibes too.

Chief Boima will be joining DJ Rupture, on what appears to be the 2nd anniversary of Mudd Up with DJ Rupture on WFMU this Monday, July 6th at 7PM. Chief Boima, an interesting, emerging voice in African diasporic music is based in San Francisco, California, where he organizes a weekly party Descendants United, and a monthly party The Highlife. He also produce music under his name, as well as in the groups Banana Clipz, Beaten By Them, and Chief y Chango. He will be discussing production influences and playing the sounds he’s currently into, everything from Ivorian Coupe Decale and Senegalese Hiphop and Mbalax to Nigerian Club, Angolan Kuduro, South African Kwaito, and the Sierra Leonean sounds he’s been specifically digging. Yeah, it’s a lot, so tune in!
