It has been declared by decree that the Changing of The Mood from this point forth will be an event held quarterly unless otherwise decided upon by the powers that be. For the first incarnation of said gathering of revelers, we were able to raise a bushel of American monetary units and throw a (beyond the) block party that found itself in the Park of the Sunset in the year 2012 of the Christian God. The follow up manifestation will make sure the world knows that Africans are indeed real, by pulling them out of the realm of myths, and pushing them deep into your ear canals, penetrating the furthest stretches of your ancestral souls.

Excitingly, the lineup for said gathering features: a Kenyan superstar scribe making his way down from the upper reaches of the Hudson river, a DJ from Africa of the South who in the current era is able to sell 30,000 physical units of House mix CDs from out the back of his carriage, four Salone borbors including a village chief, a blind genius virtuoso musician, a house music maestro, and His Imperial Majesty Lamin Fofana I. Also appearing in the pageant will be wordsmiths Old Money and beatsmith Matt Shadetek whom both represent the colony once belonging to a great people of the North, but at the current juncture remains under the reign of Emperor Bloomberg of York (the new one).

Join us on Saturday to Change The Mood!

October 13th at Public Assembly, Brooklyn. 21+. $10. 9pm.

I’ve really been enjoying the stuff that Dre Skull has been doing on his Mixpak label. He’s been covering a ton of the musical styles I enjoy including Dancehall, House and other forms of interesting beat music. We caught up when we played together at the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival and he mentioned that he was doing a compilation of southern inspired hiphop beats by electronic producers. It turns out that that’s what I’d been working on as well and so I offered to contribute something. I’m really happy with how the comp has come out, there are some great contributions from the other producers and I’m happy to be a part of it. Here’s my track The Machines which I just added to my soundcloud. Below is a link to a playlist on the Mixpak Soundcloud with all the tracks available to stream. The compilation will be available on iTunes and all other fine digital retailers on September 25th, 2012.

Fresh off playing out in Milan along with Venus X and many months flitting about the world Dutty Artz own Chief Boima rejoins us to make you sweat. This episode of the party we’re doing as a fundraiser to pay for a much overdue re-vamp of the Dutty Artz website. All you need to do is come and get drunker than you usually do and you’ll be contributing to a good cause. Myself Matt Shadetek, Atropolis, Taliesin and Lamin Fofana will soundtrack that for you.

Boima saw Sliink killing shit at SXSW this year and recommended that I invite him to Sweat Lodge and the rest will be history (soon!)  He’ll be joined by yours truly (Matt Shadetek), Atropolis and Taliesin.

This February edition of Sweat Lodge we’ve got a special guest for Sweat Lodge all the way from Colombia by way of London.  Isa GT has been a friend of the DA crew for a while now and making and releasing some awesome music. I first met her a few years ago at SXSW when she decided to jump on the mic and MC a little during my set at the Peligrosa / Tormenta Tropical party. It was outside on a patio and I played between Dubble Dutch and NguzuNguzu (before I knew DD!) and it was the first time I heard El Bebe Ambiente by NguzuNguzu. Suffice to say it was awesome and in the process Isa made a big impression on me with her personality. Actually here’s a picture, w/ everyone I mentioned plus Peligrosa madman and homie Orion. My arm looks like a weird snake but really that’s some historic shit right there. I’m happy to say we’ve connected the dots and here she is in NYC!

2012 is here.  While we’re all waiting for the mayan clock to tick over and usher in either the apocalypse or the dawn of a wonderful new era I suggest you get your mind right with the spirit world.  The spirits in question here are those concerned with getting drunk, dancing your ass off and sweating out a year worth of ghouls and goblins. ˙∆ INFOS ∆˙ DUTTY ARTZ SWEAT LODGE DJs: Geko Jones Matt Shadetek Atropolis Lamin Fofana Taliesin     Friday Jan 6th 10PM-4AM $$ FREE $$ ADMISSION at The Cove, 108 N. 6th St, Brooklyn NY.  Take the L train to Bedford or G to Lorimer and walk.  >> RSVP ON FACEBOOK <<

This month Sweat Lodge is falling a week later than usual on Friday 12/16.  Our good friends over at Turrbotax asked us for a date swap and we were happy to oblige!  This month our guest is Jubilee, a long time friend of Dutty Artz.  I’ve been wanting to get her to play Sweat Lodge but what with her hectic touring schedule and all was never able to make it happen… Till now!  She’ll be supported by your handsome residents Matt Shadetek (me), Chief Boima, Lamin Fofana and Taliesin.  It should be a lively affair.

drake smoking in front of planes, looking sad

Marvin’s Room (Shlohmo’s thru tha floor remix) – Drake by shlohmoA question I hear frequently asked about Toronto based Hiphop/RnB rapper/singer/child actor Drake in the press is why his new music is so depressing sounding and what does he have to be unhappy about? He’s young, rich and famous! He’s got a seemingly endless supply of adoring fans, pretty women, drugs, alcohol, money and a venue for his artistic expression to talk about his feelings. Hot97 is his psychotherapy couch.

When he sings:
‘Cups of the XO
Bitches in my old phone
I should call one and go home
I’ve been in this club too long
The woman that I would try
Is happy with a good guy

But I’ve been drinking so much
That I’ma call her anyway and say
“F-ck that nigga that you love so bad
I know you still think about the times we had”
I say “f-ck that nigga that you think you found
And since you picked up I know he’s not around”

(Are you drunk right now?)

I’m just sayin’, you could do better
Tell me have you heard that lately?
I’m just sayin’ you could do better
And I’ll start hatin’, only if you make me’

Drake strikes me as being honest here. Even though he has all of the above material and ego-enhancing things that many of us want, he is still not happy.  When artists are honest and speak about what’s really happening with them instead of repeating tropes that seem like the ‘industry standard’ (I’m balling! I’m awesome! I’m getting money!) it adds a richness of meaning, the texture of personal reality.  The current vogue for sipping XO (aka sizzurp, purple drank, or cough syrup made with promethazine and codeine) popularized by many rap/rnb artists including recently Drake and The Weeknd seems to support this pretty well. Codeine is an opiate, the same active ingredient found in heroin. It’s a central nervous system depressant that makes you sleepy and dulls pain when used when you’re sick. If consumed when you’re healthy it pushes pleasure buttons in your brain and feels great.   Taking codeine also kills you.  If you slow your central nervous system down enough you’ll just stop breathing. RIP DJ Screw and Pimp C. My question is: how much must you be suffering to make this glamourous lifestyle choice? Scientific research has pointed to links between the way we experience physical and psychic pain, like the pain of depression, including the fact that depression sufferers seem to have more acute physical pain.  As far as I can tell people who are happy and fulfilled don’t need to constantly take large amounts of central nervous system depressants like codeine and alcohol.

This weekend I will be busy busy busy.

Mainly with this:

BEMF Flier Lineup

I am playing early at Zablonskis on 11/11/11 (magic date) along with lots of others DJs I love for the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival curated by Mean Red.

ZABLOSKIS:

10pm-11pmMatt Shadetek
11pm-12am Shawn Reynaldo
12am-1am Dre Skull
1am-2am Dubbel Dutch
2am -3am Schlachthofbronx
3am -4am NIKKO
But I will also be opening for Kraak and Smaak at Drom on Thursday AND at the studio at Webster Hall on Saturday w/ my friend DJ Kiva. Lots of great music!

To celebrate our ongoing monthly Sweat Lodge party series at The Cove in Brooklyn (next edition next Friday Nov. 4th! info below) and to give all you unfortunates who haven’t been able to attend yet a taste of the magic I’ve recorded a new DJ mix.  It’s mixed live on Serato Itch which is something new I’ve been trying out – button pushing based DJing instead of vinyl control records – and I had a lot of fun creating it.  There are some mistakes and in the spirit of human imperfection and because I’m too lazy to edit them out I left them in.  It’s kind of representative of the drunk madness that goes down at Sweat Lodge anyway.  Although I was not drunk when I recorded this I swear.  The focus is on the Dutty Artz fam and catalog with a bunch of new and unreleased tunes and remixes from the crew.  Enjoy!

Next Friday September 9th we’re back at the Cove for another Dutty Artz family reunion.  I’d just like to say thanks so much to everyone who came and partied and played at the last one, especially Uproot Andy and 2Melo, I really enjoyed it and I think it was maybe our best attended party yet. For the next one we’ve got Chicago’s own DJ NewLife who has been running one of Chicago’s best tropical/whateverbass parties flying in to drop some bombs for us AND DA’s own Taliesin is back in the states after a crazy world traveling year spent in Brazil, Jamaica and South Africa (and many places in between).  Chief Boima is also back in the building after his own travels in Africa, if you were there for the last one he was dropping some crazy music from Liberia that really caught my attention and I’m eagerly waiting to hear what he’ll play this time.  Lamin Fofana is also re-joining us and I’m equally excited to hear what he’ll pull out with the new DJ setup he’s using, hopefully including some of the new crazy techno-ish stuff he’s been producing.  As usual I will be there DJing, selling hats, shirts and CDs and of course getting drunk and yelling over my friends DJ sets.
