We’ve decided to throw a last minute benefit show to help make a financial contribution to the ongoing relief efforts in Haiti. If you’ve followed this at all it is an absolutely harrowing, horrible catastrophe that has befallen a place that was already a very difficult place to live for many people. The show is in only two days so PLEASE email this to your friends in New York, put it on your Facebook, Twitter, etc. and help us get the word out. We as DJs will not be taking any payment from this and the proceeds will be donated to charity. We are currently seeking expert advice on who to donate it to, suggestions are welcome.

Nice new version on Dre Skull’s Smoke Machine Riddim, the riddim for Vybz Kartel’s “Yuh Love” by Ms. Thing and Psycho Tanbad. This one is called “Bonify”. Ms. Thing you know from her hit with Bennie “Dude”, Psycho Tanbad I don’t know but he sounds good on this. It’s a nice call and response ballad and I still love this riddim, soft and sentimental, a great bed for dutty love lyrics. Big tune, and bigup to the Mixpak records crew for giving these out on a freebie, dutty and clean.

Lately I’ve been having fun typing things into Google’s little search box at the top right of my browser and seeing what comes up as suggestions. Today I was reading about the Pine Ridge Lakota Sioux Reservation on Wikipedia and there was a mention of Caucasian people, who have a wikipedia entry too. This however lead me to see what google had to say about white people so I tried my friend the search box. Hilariously the first result was ‘white people stole my car’. What? Needless to say I clicked through. Turns out that a while back if you typed ‘white people stole my car’ into Google, the helpful googleoids would ask “did you mean black people stole my car?” Screenshot below. I can’t vouch for the veracity of the screenshot but I did find it very funny.

Jahdan and I are off to Europe tonight and looking very much forward to our shows. We’ll be in Berlin from the 14th – 17th (Monday – Thursday) with some down time doing some interviews, voicing dubplates and seeing friends. If you’re around get at us via email or similar, my phone won’t be working out there. If you’re a sound and want dubs from Jahdan and are in any of the cities on the tour, holler.

Here’s a new mix I did for K-Mag aka Knowledge Mag from the UK. This one kind of reflects pretty accurately the stuff that I’m playing out now. Lot’s of 130bpm house and dancehall and a little bit of dubstep and stuff like it. There are several new unreleased unheard tunes by me in the mix. There’s also an interview with me and Rupture with the original post about the mix. Enjoy!

My friend DJ Kiva who teaches at Dubspot with me showed me this yesterday. It’s a compilation of a couple of clips of artist/engineer Theo Jansen’s work in motion. He calls it kinetic sculpture and it’s insanely beautiful.

Real talk from one of my favorite DJs in the UK Funky scene. In this interview by Blackdown Marcus Nasty speaks out in his traditional opinionated way about why he thinks the grime scene died and the way forward for UK Funky which he has become one of the leading DJs in. I enjoy Marcus sets because as a fellow post-grime person he is playing house but keeping it raw. I love the new UK funky sounds and have been playing a lot of it and find that it is even leading me into some of the smoother stuff but basically I still like raw, percussive, heavy tunes. Getting into a lot of what people think of as ‘normal house’ is just too far for me and a lot of the DJs coming from there into funky play too smooth for me. Marcus has (or has had, he’s sounding a little more mature now) a rep for being a big muscle-y dude who will beat you up and you can tell he’s pretty unconcerned about offending anyone which lends a certain truthiness to this interview.
