Barington Levy – Rock and Come In Scientist Extended Mix

If you like these shattered songs, do come in early tomorrow! I’ve got loads more (rare vinyls in digital format), and I plan to to play a dub-heavy set tomorrow night, 10PM – 11:30-ish.  I might drop in two or three recent favorites/freshness, but I’d like to keep it 97% dusty and mystical! Also, I don’t feel the pressure/anxiousness I felt last/first time I deejayed (although NY Tropical 6 was quite massive!) The nervousness is dissolving, and quickly being replaced by excitement and optimism.  If I lapse into a state of irreverence or just absolute enjoyment… I’m only letting the music take over.  Reality is hard right now, goal is to get lifted and transported. Enjoyment!

Jahdan Blakkamoore featuring 77Klash – Best I Ever Had Freestyle

Jahdan’s album Buzzrock Warrior drops in September. In the meantime, we’re setting the Summer on fire with Jahdan’s Bazooka Shot mixtape, which is coming sooner than you think.  The night this freestyle was done, I think the guys (Jahdan, Klash, and Matt) recorded five other tracks, and this was the last one.  It was pure fun.  I gave the instrumental to Matt, he edited/re-shaped it in less than two minutes, Jahdan & Klash went in.  Jahdan was alredy familiar with the hit song by Toronto’s own Drake, and was singing it the minute he heard the beat. I had never heard this song by choice.  Klash wasn’t familiar with it, so he start singing Radiohead’s “Climbing the Walls,” and I was like yeah! Anyway, the vibe at Casa de la Jones (Geko Jones’ home-studio, where it all goes down) was great, and everyone was having a good time.  We’re doing it again next week, putting the finishing touches on the Bazooka Shot tape.  Jahdan and Klash are going in again, and they might be remixing, freestyling, covering whatever tune they feel like again.

As you all probably may know I teach at DubSpot in NYC teaching people to make beats with Logic. For Dubspot’s second anniversary Dan who runs it is doing some parties. This one should be great, Rupture and I will be there DJing. Of special interest, at least to me, is the early sound-check session where dub master Scientist will be giving a talk about mic placement and general production/mixing wizardry before the show. The daytime seminars, including one with Rupture, should be very cool too.

NYC’s #1 art party is back!

Eyebeam’s warehouse space comes alive with the audience becoming an integral

part of the performance

MIXER: VERSION takes its inspiration in part from the creative approaches of dub reggae music in which an original music recording is remixed by various producers, creating new versions that still reference the original. Within this creative exchange between producers there exists both a competitive spirit and a sense of shared culture.

At MIXER: VERSION, the competition and collaboration take place between the artists and audience through the artwork. Participants can jam on the “rock stage” with hacked iPods, sing ridiculous computer-generated lyrics in the Fever Karaoke room, or produce their own hot audiovisual mixes on the mobile Sansystem. All of that creative magic gets mixed together by our own crack DJs and VJs, so at any given time you might be providing the entertainment for everyone at the party!

Saturday night DJ sets: DJ N-Ron, with Geko Jones and Uproot Andy |(DUTTY ARTZ | https://duttyartz.com/)

Trouble In Paradise, an amazing zoo installation project by Christoph Steinbrener and Rainer Dempf [via Pruned].

Since here we are all about NEW YORK TROPICAL and related notions of global warming in terms of temperature and riddims, irrational environments, sweat, urban entangled in nature, etc, these fotos are, well, right up our jungle-alley.

DJ Quik & Kurupt – Jupiter’s Critic & The Mind of Mars

DJ Quik and Kurupt’s collaborative effort BlaQKout is an absolutely stunning album. It’s frightening how well DJ Quik makes experimental and ambiguous music (keeping it way 2 fonky!) yet remaining accessible, grounded and extremely authentic. Kurupt’s performance is also on point through out the album, comfortably pushing ahead with personality, substance, and humor.  It’s also worth checking Matthew Africa’s eye-opening and lovingly put together Quik tape.  I am listening to Mos Def’s latest long player The Ecstastic as well. There is a lot of creativity and innovation in these two albums.

BLACK STARS BRING SUMMER HEAT…

DVA – Bullet A Go Gly (featuring Badness, Riko, Flowdan, and Killer P)

Major new, buyable 12″/mp3 release from Keysound Recordings. DVA keeps it raw and defiant, and all the MCs here are extra tuff.  I just can’t tell you how great I think this is right now, but I’ll try.  It is just perfect, extremely exciting, and aggressive grime we just can’t get enough of.  The release also contains an excellent remix from Dusk + Blackdown.

P Money and ??? – Fruit & Veg (DigitalRip)

Another amazing tune – this one is tough, but also quite funny at the same time.  The audio quality is poor, but the jam knocks hard regardless.  In a very tense atmosphere constructed by the producer (whose name we don’t know), two MCs (P Money and and another MC whose name we don’t know either) throw insults and accusations at apples, mangos, oranges, peas, carrots, broccolis, etc.  The attacks and accusations are particularly vicious, especially the ones directed at grapes and berries.
