I hadn’t heard of Wedge before, but am feeling his production, more of this post-dilla, slowish dubstep kind of thing that keeps popping up. It’s a little reminiscent of darkstar. Nice to hear radio sets where the djs are blatantly having a laugh in the studio… Vibes!!

Lucky Dragons’ performances overturn conventions of electronic music with generosity and grace. On Monday October 12, they will join DJ Rupture to share sounds and discuss the relationship between social and sonic experimentation, Los Angeles, erasing the barriers between performer and audience, and more.
(Also, something I’m aware of but completely forgot to mention:) Lucky Dragons opened for Thom Yorke’s new band debut (both nights) in L.A. last week!! You know, that new band that also features Flea of Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Thanks to Big Brother Rupture for the reminder!

Today is Eid, Ramadan just ended. Monday’s radio show – WFMU, 91.1 fm 7-8pm – will feature some celebratory music from Muslim areas of Africa and beyond, as well as the usual helpings of new heat & decentertainment. Kayne probably would interrupt Jesus, but that’s another story.
In addition to the Ramadan-y special, we’ll unleash some previews from Anti-Pop Consortium‘s upcoming album, Flourescent Black, (their best yet, for real), and I’m pleased to announce that NYC’s legendary rap innovators will be joining Lamin & I live on-air next Monday, September 28! We’re gonna rap about rap, music, afrofuturizm, and much more, alongside an all A.P.C. selection of exclusives and influences. Should be big!
Tune in Mudd Up! with DJ Rupture on WFMU tonight at 7PM, as Roberto Ernesto Gyemant aka DJ Beto, the man responsible for putting together those wonderful volumes of 1960s and ’70s “cumbia tropical & calypso funk” from Panama, joins Rupture to talk and share some incredible music (most likely some exclusives that are not included on the comps.) The compilations are released on Soundway Records. I am especially looking forward to the talk and the music Beto is going to play for us. I have been fascinated with the music of Panama ever since our visit from Wayne Marshall and Raquel Z Revera. This is from Analog Africa‘s latest compilation of incredible/obscure/forgotten 1970s West African dancefloor masterpieces Legends of Benin. We play sweet, deep throwbacks like this one every Monday 7PM to 8PM Mudd Up radio with DJ Rupture on WFMU 91.1 fm (listen from the archives)– stream, or get podcast. “La Musica en VeriteÌ” is the amazing closing track on Legends of Benin. It’s an inviting and inspiring jam, calling you, telling you to get on the floor and shake your bones a little before the party ends, but I’ll manage to squeeze it in among all the fresh, happening raps early @ NYT9 this Friday!
GETTIN’ BLACK AS I WANT!
[audio:http://nyc.duttyartz.com/mp3s/MosDef-Revelations.mp3]“Revelations,” a mellow and extraordinary post-Obama, ridiculously pro-black, one-verse track with shots directed at the CIA, the US Federal Reserve/bankers/money-grubbers, doubters and none-believers, the recession, race, violence, etc. New York has been very hot and sticky lately, and Mos Def‘s latest album The Ecstatic has been in heavy rotation, especially the tracks with themes that are seemingly nonsensical/irrational/unhelpful for the times we are in. Just yesterday, we played two cuts from it on WFMU’s Mudd Up! with DJ Rupture. While we’re talking Mudd Up! radio, here are two more joints Rupture played (on his first and in all likelihood last cumbia-free show)Â – another Mos track titled “Wahid”, and a song by “the most unusual star on the planet” (at least, that’s what he, himself claims.) Chief Boima will be joining DJ Rupture, on what appears to be the 2nd anniversary of Mudd Up with DJ Rupture on WFMU this Monday, July 6th at 7PM. Chief Boima, an interesting, emerging voice in African diasporic music is based in San Francisco, California, where he organizes a weekly party Descendants United, and a monthly party The Highlife. He also produce music under his name, as well as in the groups Banana Clipz, Beaten By Them, and Chief y Chango. He will be discussing production influences and playing the sounds he’s currently into, everything from Ivorian Coupe Decale and Senegalese Hiphop and Mbalax to Nigerian Club, Angolan Kuduro, South African Kwaito, and the Sierra Leonean sounds he’s been specifically digging. Yeah, it’s a lot, so tune in!
