Weird new video from Nguzunguzu feat. Leilah Weinraub for the track “Got U” which is off the brilliant free Nguzunguzu EP –still up for grabs, so get it in your life.
Big tune from Wiley’s forthcoming album. The beat is by Shy FX which apparently was a remix that became the main mix. Very nice house/old school hiphop something or other vibes. Wiley in top form as always, picked up from Marcus Visionary’s blog where there’s lots of other good stuff.
Big shout out to the people from Tunes on Bunch.TV, they put together this very nice concert film of Jahdan and myself, Matt Shadetek, performing at the Stadtgarten in Cologne. It was the first night it had really snowed on the tour and I remember we ended up having to walk back to the hotel with our stuff after trying to get a cab for about 45 minutes through the streets full of wasted people who had all just gotten out of various clubs and bars into the new snow. Big shoutout to Uh-Young Kim who put the show on and all the people who braved the elements to come rock with us, we had a great time.
ALSO me and Jahdan are planning to come back out to Europe in June, if you’d like to have us play in your town get in touch via bookings AT duttyartz DOTT com.
Cool Dutty Artz interview/mini-doc featuring Shadetek and Jahdan over at XLR8R – part of their Labels We Love Series. Check iTunes for XLR8R Presents Labels We Love, Vol. 1 featuring a new tune from Chief Boima titled “Techno Rumba” (an official release will be out soon) and the Jahdan Blakkamoore banger “Buss It Pon Dem” (produced by Chancha Via Circuito.)
New video from Erykah Badu featuring Lil Wayne “Jump Up In The Air (Stay There)” from her upcoming album New Amerykah Part II: Return Of The Ankh – You already know this is a great song, but pay close attention to the lyrics and you’ll appreciate it even more; plenty memorable lines – (hip-hop) “church never felt this good before,” “my level, far from the devil/have some manners, and say hello to the angels,” “I am on the ceiling stuck like a fan full of dust, like a fist full of bucks…” etc. As for the video, it has stunning moments; Wayne clearing a cloud of purple smoke to “elevate” with Ms. Badu is one of those.
I first heard this tune at a party in the Bronx, Summer 2005 or maybe ’06– I don’t remember exactly. Big up all Ghanaian massive in the Bronx. I can recall a friend telling me at the time that “You May Kiss Your Bride” was a smash in Accra, on the radio, in bars and clubs, at football marches, and of course at weddings. This clip also appears on a VCD compilation titled Ghana Vs Nigeria: Super Hits Videos –purchased in a street market in Freetown in December ’09. By the way, if you dig this track don’t sleep on Akwaaba Music’s Move It Chaleh — more recent hiplife goodness among other things (like Monou Sidibe’s incredible “Mali Mousso.”)
The people from local NY PBS TV show ‘New York On The Clock‘ came and filmed a show that Jahdan and I did a few months back at Public Assembly along with a short but informative interview with Jahdan.
I imagine I like Afrikan Boy, he seems like a fairly relaxed and pleasant person. This new video, shot in the imaginary offices of ‘Afrikan Airlines’ is quite enjoyable.  Ever since he did a grime influenced tune a few years back about getting caught shoplifting in Lidl (a very very cheap European supermarket chain where I used to buy groceries in Berlin) I’ve been rooting for him. Also I think it’s cool that he raps in a Nigerian accent, which up til now has been (and still is?) considered uncool, giving rise to a bunch of Africans in grime who try to sound yardie and end up completely unintelligible. via Ghetto Bassquake.
The world will be tested by Texas Instruments and English diction…
One of my favorite bands released an album sometime in mid-2009, and I’m only coming across it/listening to it now. They have been gone for so long, and their buzz so quiet now. Nevertheless, it’s great to see Tjinder Singh & Co. return with more brilliant tunes. When I Was Born for the 7th Time is their most cited album and it’s charm is undeniable, a true classic— but (in high school and college) I found myself listening to Handcream for a Generation and Woman’s Gotta Have It more than anything else.Â
New video for Schlachthof Bronx and big Spoek Mathambo’s new joint ‘Ayoba’ from their Ayoba EP on Man Recordings. Love the low-fi video, blankets, cardboard cutouts lets gooooooooo!
EDIT: And here’s the track as a legit free download:
A hands-down classic; this is one of the greatest Coupe Decale songs ever.
& here’s the opening track from the first volume of a massive Coupe compilation Abijan En Feu (Nouvelles Dances | Nouvelles Ambiances). This has all the attributes a nice jump-start groove should have – first, a comical, deranged sounding character shouting gibberish (or rather speaking in a language we don’t clearly understand,) a few seconds in, a more commanding and heavy voice takes charge, and serious outbursts of singing and speed-rapping backed by incredible music from DJ Arafat (myspace) follows. This one is guaranteed to scale up parties and move bodies.
Chief Boima‘s version is not as funny, but it’s a guaranteed dance floor scorcher. The Chief is a badman producer from the left coast who recently unleashed a free EP heat up your winter – African By The Bay (62 megabyte ZIP file), feel free to to download and re-post on your site.
