“Me nah run like track star / through the thick and thin she have mi front she have mi back star”

Been knocking this one around the house lately. Vybz Kartel in a surprisingly sweet mode. No gun ballad here. Dre Skull went in on the buttons, also check his tune with 77Klash ‘Call Me’. Sensitive thug music from the Gaza. Get it on iTunes.

DJ Rupture & Matt Shadetek Solar Life Raft CD Cover
OK we’re going in again. This time it’s me and Rupture, Solar Life Raft, the new mix album dropping November 11th on The Agriculture. For those of you that caught Uproot and enjoyed it we’re taking the format and going in deeper, wider, rougher. Me and /R have been cooking up tracks together for a while, some of which are appearing on Jahdan’s album and some on SLR. It’s our first official thing together with our names on it which is pretty exciting. It’s got a bunch of unreleased exclusive new collabo instrumentals plus excluse remixes of Telepathe and Gang Gang Dance. Mad I know. Expect to hear a lot more about it here soon.

With the release of Solar Life Raft, DJ /rupture and Matt Shadetek emerge from the shores of Brooklyn bearing gifts from the future. A rich blend of bass, beats, and space, rocked by a tropical wind out of the west, Solar Life Raft is an arresting testament to the fruit that grows at the margins, free from genre orthodoxy and pulsing with gentle mutant energy. Created by two individuals with a shared appreciation for engaging with streetwise dance music from a ground-up, participatory perspective, as well as more experimental sounds, Solar Life Raft, the duo’s first extended project together, features tracks blended on three decks into a complete hypnotic and gripping narrative.

This is, how you say, my shit. Instinct, producer from De Tropix, made this mashup of Mavado’s hit So Blessed. Some people are saying ‘soca’ which seems to be everyone’s go to term for anything that is 4×4 with snares that aren’t straight on the upbeats. If you listen to soca you know that soca is FAST which this isn’t. Sounds kinda like Funky to me but with the sugary synths and Vado mashup I personally will be filing this under LDN Tropical. I like the graphic too but to really get there it needs more animals but that’s just me. Anyway, BAD.

As you all probably may know I teach at DubSpot in NYC teaching people to make beats with Logic. For Dubspot’s second anniversary Dan who runs it is doing some parties. This one should be great, Rupture and I will be there DJing. Of special interest, at least to me, is the early sound-check session where dub master Scientist will be giving a talk about mic placement and general production/mixing wizardry before the show. The daytime seminars, including one with Rupture, should be very cool too.

Very cool little short video of Just Blaze showing part of how he makes his hiphop beats, in this case a great and very fast way to chop samples and set them up for triggering in the EXS sampler in Logic.  Thanks to Timeblind for the linkage.  This is what I love about Logic.  Any time I’m working with someone else, or teaching my class at Dubspot, I learn some new different way to do the things I do when making beats.  Timeblind is also a super Logic wizard and has taught me lots.  In this case I didn’t know that you could split regions during playback OR drag from arrange into the EXS editor.  Logic heads will appreciate this.  AND if this has you scratching your head and thinking “That looks really cool, I want to be able to do that” you should sign up for the next session of my class at Dubspot, starting August 15th on Saturdays from 4-6:45pm in Manhattan.  The session after that is November 11th Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:15 to 1PM.  Lamin is in my group on Thursday’s that just started last week and will be doing some blog posts here and on the Dubspot blog about it.

Thanks to www.mikechav.com for putting this up, a bunch of good producing videos on his site.

After a few intense months of beat-making, recording and asking a few favors from friends, DUTTY ARTZ family finished production on Jahdan Blakkamoore‘s debut album, Buzzrock Warrior.  We think its the best thing we’ve ever made, and we’re proud to announce that Gold Dust Media agree with us, as they will be releasing Buzzrock, insuring that our take on Brooklyn Tropical Dubstep  will be heard worldwide.  The album brings together many of the Dutty Artz crew’s interests including dancehall, digital cumbia, grime, dubstep and other delicious tropical sounds.

Jahdan is in fine form throughout singing and chatting over riddims from diverse producers including homegrown tunes by Shadetek and Rupture, ragga techno dons Modeselektor, grime super hero Jammer, the Zizek crew’s Chancha via Circuito and globe trotter Maga Bo.   Dutty Artz extended family 77Klash appears twice on guest vocal duties and provides the gorgeous uncategorizable beat for ‘She Said’ while top grime boy Durrty Goodz goes in hard with JD on ‘Mesmerized’ and Abena Koomson joins in to bring us slowly down on closer ‘Rise Again’.

For an early taste of the vibes check out The General, out now on 12″ with banging dubstep remixes by Noah D. and Marcus Visionary and also look for Jahdan’s appearance, the roots flavored ‘Cash Flow’, on Diplo and Switch’s highly anticipated Major Lazer project available June 16th.

I was gchatting with Rupture talking about this tune and said “It was great when I was drunk on Friday”.  And it was, and everyone else seemed to think so too because they went crazy.  And that’s basically the best description of Uproot Andy’s Amadou & Miriam B’More remix of “Sabali” I’m gonna come up with.  Up now for free DL (along with a blend with some great new Busy Signal tunes) at the big Eddie Stats Ghetto Palms Fader column.  Eddie actually does a sick blend of it out of a new Busy vocal on the Bmore track I “Just Wanna Fuck”.  Hothead! Hothead!

For those wondering why we’ve got the ‘esoteric luv’ category over there in the tag cloud, listen to this.  Timeblind goes in again with this new deep-as-the-marineris-trench-dubstep-what-you-call-it mix.  Timeblind is definitely never ever normal, here he sits us down again and patiently shows us what is going on in his mind, in the form of an mp3 file.  Who knew?

This episode of “Gangland” is a crazy documentary about gangs in the Third Ward of New Orleans which get’s even crazier when Katrina hits. It’s definitely pretty sensational but also a compelling and candid portrait of a place and a group of people on the edges of society in a dark moment. It’s 45 minutes, stream it when you’ve got some time.

New York it’s time to get tropical again. This time Uproot Andy and Matt Shadetek will be joined by The Fader’s own Eddie Stats, Lamin Fofana of Recession Rap fame will be making his DJ debut early and DA extended family 77Klash will be live on-stage bringing that BK heat. Those who know me definitely know Klash from our songs together “Brooklyn Anthem” with Jahdan Blakkamoore, “Mad Again (Whoa!)” featuring Johnny Osbourne and the newest “Pressure” which you can download below.
