at this point, when Spoek sends stuff, we blog/listen/spread the HIVIP immediate. no time to waste when it’s “dark township tech house sothocore new wave zulu funky. It’s the kind of cold that cuts to the bone. that king of gold. Inspired by the four cold ass weeks in europe on tour. Gun finger in mittens anyone??”

Spoek Mathamobo – H.I.V.I.P. 2: Post Coital Depression mix [or: zshare]

(i am particularly feeling the cold ass weeks in europe thang, as Sweat X and I have been missing each other in Eurolandia — which, although it isn’t colder than New York, there’s something about traveling in this weather and not being home that makes that chill cut all the deeper. But- warm hospitality abounds, shout 2 Vince & Nowarian & Roland & Feelipa & Andreja & Leila)

Beef brings out the best in people. It might be time to start some over here… but first:epic Wiley slapdown delivered by Durrty Goodz. High velocity, high density.

Goodz’ “Cokey the Snowman” was a response to Wiley’s “Angry Garden Gnome”, also impressive. plus the title: Angry Garden Gnome! Ultra-Britishness!

AbenaKoomson pdp

Dutty Artz family member Abena Koomson will be participating in a FREE tribute to Miriam Makeba next Friday Jan 16 @ Brooklyn’s BAM cafe (Brooklyn Academy of Music). Miriam Makeba’s life & legacy runs deep, it’ll be a pleasure to check Abena and friends raising up in song.

In many ways Makeba was inspiration for my Gold Teeth Thief mix from awhile back – I got a Syliphone comp CD with her ‘Djiguinira’ track and it floored me. Floored. In that instant I was like yes, I’m gonna do a a mix and it’s gonna end with this. Everything else flowed around that; she was the cornerstone.

so last year we were grinding and just the other day Shadetek & I sat down and counted: we’ve got 3 Dutty ARtz ALBUMS finished and done, and a bunch of other stuff, and another mix in the planning… so while 2008 was indeed nonstop hustle-time, this year most of those results will be unleashed.

for first fruits, check Rob Da Bank’s show this weekend, BBC Radio 1. I’m taking over the decks for an hourlong cumbia/new york tropical special, and will be debuting 2 tunes from the upcoming Jahdan Blakkamoore album, one an deep boom-knocker cooked up by Maga Bo (catch him holding it down w/ Sinden @ Fabric on Feb 6th!), and the other built by Matt, with Durrty Goodz tearing up the mic alongside JD. Cause that’s how it is.

…here’s a jam for everyone who woke up this morning afternoon with a headache. “when the wine is in the wit is out / rasta don’t drink wine”

The Heptones – Mistry Babylon

Lee Perry produced Mistry Babylon and this next tune, a classic piece of smoky studio genius, wet with echo and reverb. Debra Keese’s gorgeous vocals and lyrics get me every time.

[audio:http://nyc.duttyartz.com/mp3s/Brother Noah – Shadows.mp3]

The Shadows – Brother Noah

Although her vocals are present for much of the tune, Brother Noah is a dub version. Here’s the original for comparision/completists:

Debra Keese – Travelling

I guess Lee Perry is one of the most famous crazy old black men around. Maga Bo was riding his bike on the beach in Rio de Janeiro and looked up — Lee Perry stood there in full regalia, talking to some German girls. He wasn’t in town for a concert or anything, he was just hanging out on Copacabana as if it were the most natural thing in the world and it probably was.

Most of the crazy old black men I see are on the subway, with plastic bags and newspaper scraps. Unthinkably alone. Sometimes with no shoes, sometimes with as many accesories and bonkers sartorial flair as Scratch, The Upsetter, himself.

spoek-healer

Spoek Mathambo, our favorite fashion genius / faith healer / rapper, just sent me some heat from Jo’burg.

“mr jace-o-matic…i am really getting into djing now…playing house from south africa…finding gems…thought i should spread some cheer…”

NYC is covered in snow now which is pretty but will soon be gray sludge, plus 3 friends of mine have all been laid off in the last 4 weeks. Life sucks! Although I expect the party scene will improve as crazed desperation spreads.

so here’s some nu house jams from South Africa, where it is SUMMER, thnx 2 Spoek, aka half of Sweat X and half of Playdoe. We played together in Paris and the Playdoe set was a definite highlight of 2008, it was LIVE.

Weakness in Me

it took a minute, but the vinyl version of Jahdan Blakkamoore’s WE ARE RAIDERS EP is out now in the UK!

This dutty slab of New York Tropical contains ‘Go Round Payola’, ‘Nice Green’ (both prod. by Matt Shadetek), Buss It Pon Dem (prod. by Buenos Aires bredren Chancha Via Circuito), and the vinyl-only exclusive futuristic ladies-tunes ‘Pon Time’, beat crafted by Austria badman Stereotyp.

112112112112

look for it in all shops stocking bass weight, here’s what Boomkat had 2 say:

The DJ Rupture/Shadetek curated Dutty Artz imprint moves from strength to strength with the labels first drop from Jahdan Blackamore, longtime vocallist for Matt Shadetek and Rupture himself. The A-side reels hard under the pressure of two of the heaviest street anthems we’ve heard this year with matt Shadetek cocking back on ‘Go Round Payola’ and Austro-dub specialist Stereotyp releasing the chain on ‘Pon Time’.

Matt Shadetek’s effort may split opinion for the simple but divisive issue of liberal auto-tune application, which in our opinion sound ridiculously good here but there’s a few out there who’d rather suck toes than listen to 3 minutes of hyper-emo pitch corrections. The cut itself is a rude 120bpm soca indebted smasher with rampant electro squlechlines adding to the severely artificial flavour, and it funking kicks like a camel on heat, only compounded by Blackamore’s singjay kinda style auto-tuned to order by Matt S. If you loved the Silverlink & Jammer ‘Message Is Love’ 12″ you’ll be all over this.

Stereotyp shakes up the bashment proper on ‘Pon Time’ with mentally detuned rave signals and a slightly less brutal application of auto-tune vox for a wicked and wild party track, and Matt Shadetek finishes off the one-two with ‘Nice Green’. A hymn to the sticky icky from Jahdan with a wicked dancehall dubstep flavour reminding us of Sizzla & MRK 1’s finest moment on ‘I Got Too’ but given the Shadetek overhaul with some unhinged LFO sub wobbles. Chancha via Circuito steps up finally to manufacture the beat for ‘Buss It Pon Dem’, switching styles once again to a sick reggaeton bumper with minimal beats optimized for club play at the slowest and heaviest rave you’ve ever been to.

We loved the last EP on Dutty Artz and we love this one even more. If you’re into anything from Hud Mo, to Rustie, from Ikonika to Rupture, to Roska or DJ Mujava we’d recommend you clear a bit of dancing space for this one. Very Large.
