About two years ago, Papoose was a promising, young rapper with heavy street buzz (countless mixtapes, hot97-radio love, magazine/blog exposure, etc.) and a 1.5 million dollar record deal in the works with Jive Records. Well, the deal fell through, and Pap bragged on subsequent tapes that he kept the 1.5 million from the label, but plans for his debut album The Nacirema Dream never actually materialized. Pap has been releasing mixtapes (and greatest hits from his previous tapes) and newer bits/leaks surfaced every now and then. On this particular track, he’s disgruntled, disgusted with the whole music industry and he’s letting his feelings known, keeping it one hundred/real (as “real” as rappers can keep it anyway.)

I got put up on Octa Push by the hospitable folks of Bristol’s finest BassMusic/Karnival crew Ruffnek Diskotek. After a massive fry up we were listening to some tunes and Octa Push stood out as some serious heat… A few internet mediated communications later- and we have a brief and incredibly straight forward interview direct for DA from the Iberian peninsula.
Who is Octa Push?
We’re two brothers, Dizzycutter and Mushug and we both have been making beats for a while but only started making them together in the beginning of 2008. Started a bit like a joke when our friends at Conspira (one of the first crews pushing bass music in Portugal) booked us for a show. We had to find a name and make loads of beats, it went well and then we decided to take it a bit more seriously. Since then things been moving really fast and we’ve been lucky to play in wicked places!
We did official remixes for people like Buraka Som Sistema, Débruit, Mochipet, Monkey Steak and more..
Our sound has it’s main influences UK garage, bashment, techno, afrobeat and loads of diferent things..

On Thursday night after the Bomba Estereo show we’re hosting an LAMC after party with a slew of invited guests and unannounced surprise performances. DJ TOTAL FREEDOM & NGUZUNGUZU host a weekly party in LA called Wildness. It transforms Tuesday nights into fun dancing mayhem. I played a few months back and suddenly I heard 808 kicks that weren’t in the track. I look up – Total Freedom is banging a drum machine… and
1. it wasn’t annoying!! i can’t imagine ANY other scenario where someone uninvited starts drumming on top of my DJing, but somehow this was alright & even kinda cool.
&
2. it’s hard to create a space of freedom, even in the club world, so it was great to drop in on their scene.

Chief Boima will be joining DJ Rupture, on what appears to be the 2nd anniversary of Mudd Up with DJ Rupture on WFMU this Monday, July 6th at 7PM. Chief Boima, an interesting, emerging voice in African diasporic music is based in San Francisco, California, where he organizes a weekly party Descendants United, and a monthly party The Highlife. He also produce music under his name, as well as in the groups Banana Clipz, Beaten By Them, and Chief y Chango. He will be discussing production influences and playing the sounds he’s currently into, everything from Ivorian Coupe Decale and Senegalese Hiphop and Mbalax to Nigerian Club, Angolan Kuduro, South African Kwaito, and the Sierra Leonean sounds he’s been specifically digging. Yeah, it’s a lot, so tune in!
Good friend and fellow bass fiend The Crooked Clef has the best taste of any of the bloggers writing over at Trash Menagerie. He also does serious damage behind his Traktor pulled decks. He has been putting out a semi-regular series called Trash in the Bassment- check last edition’s tropical deluge for confirmation of the mans skills and taste. His latest goes all house-y in that way that I get embarrassed about loving. This is, how you say, my shit. Instinct, producer from De Tropix, made this mashup of Mavado’s hit So Blessed. Some people are saying ‘soca’ which seems to be everyone’s go to term for anything that is 4×4 with snares that aren’t straight on the upbeats. If you listen to soca you know that soca is FAST which this isn’t. Sounds kinda like Funky to me but with the sugary synths and Vado mashup I personally will be filing this under LDN Tropical. I like the graphic too but to really get there it needs more animals but that’s just me. Anyway, BAD.
This Friday, July 3rd – Quite Possibly the most fun I’ll have playing a show this summer. Every year La Farra NYC hosts the Vallenato on the River boat party and this year they’ve hooked up with Que Bajo?! to make sure the Afro Colombian heat gets represented as well.
