It’s that time of year in Budapest. Sunglasses, legs, and the wonderful ice cold soda water and white wine fröccs. If there’s anything in the youth landscape here that says “emerging economy” its the prevalence of a water downed wine drink that comes in (according to a friend) ten ratios including the “artist’s” which is 1 part wine to 9 parts water. It’s hard to imagine why I’ve spent a minute inside since the temperature hit 70 a few days ago…

Listening to the amazing set of mixes that Gex and Lamin and Matt have put out in the last month made me get over my turntable fetish and start fucking with Ableton….. Samizdat is the result. I dare you to find or put out another mix that includes both drone-doom gods Earth and Times Square Blue evoking Leif

Thanks again to everyone who came out last time.  We’re doing it again.  We’re always looking for people doing things that we like and can vibe with in NYC to link up and get rainforesty with us.  This time our guest is new signee to Diplo’s Mad Decent label Maluca.  Those who were there  last time know what I’m saying, I tried to lean on the wall behind the DJ booth and nearly busted my ass it was so slippery.  Shoutouts to Contessa hosting and NY Remezcla on promotional support.

ST, 6 TRE G, and AC Burna – Feel The (Chris Brown)

eXclusive new music from Slowmotion Soundz,  produced by Block Beataz so you already know it knocks.

R&B superstar Chris Brown grew up in a domestic battlefield, and eventually/allegedly/recently involved in a lovers’ quarrel with his superstar girlfriend Rihanna which turned violent.  It’s heartbreaking and sad, and I can imagine every sane individual who knew this story hope something meaningful and productive came out of the situation–more public discussions (not just in the tabloids and gossip blogs) of a domestic, hidden, and intimate problem.  And we have this track here, which is all about driving a nice car with a sick soundsystem.

For another recent Chris brown/pop violence reference in rap music, check Maino’s “Murdergram.” Not productive, but it also knocks – “down for anything even knocking out Suge.”

dead prez – Stimulus Plan

Never mind the global economic crisis, what are your plans to feed your family? Food prices on the streets of Senegal, Malawi, Egypt and other less affluent countries are rising while people are loosing jobs. While all those powerful world leaders are in London trying to settle their differences and tackle the economic crisis in comfortable and safe trappings, away from the protesters and the grime. Here in Brooklyn, USA (while I was getting my shape-up yesterday I saw a man eating a butter-roll/bread and butter and said that was his dinner-~he might have been joking, but in these times, you never know) “our favorite major label, corporate owned black radicals” dead prez is telling you to come up with your own solution, your own fiscal stimuli, and navigate your way out of economic darkness.  From their forthcoming Pulse of the People project, said to be produced entirely by DJ Green Lantern.  Props to Nah Right.

Recession Rap JamsMy grind is my stimulus plan

April fools, they’re not really, but that actually happened to me in junior high school and was terrible.  One week from tonight NYC it’s a wednesday night sweat-out courtesy of the great Thanh of Unit One and the Broken Teeth Crew featuring Your’s Truly.  What will I play?  I have no idea, but it will be magically delicious, I promise.

Geko Jones was guest hosting Moglo Radio this week and he put together a beautiful hour of tropical travels. This is good for your in home personal dance parties, I know cause it was recorded in my Bed Stuy apartment and the place was jumping. For real, I was jumping. I got all amped and tried to have a cumbia cd delivered with our tacos, cause they do sell them at the restaurant, but alas the tacos arrived alone. Don’t worry though, I’ll try again next time, I’m determined to have cumbia delivered to my door.

In the meantime, grab the radio show below, put it on, and start practicing your moves for the next Que Bajo dance party on April 9th at APT, as well as every Thursday in April after that.

Also I wanna shout out Chief Boima who has two new productions featured in Geko’s mix, one of them in collaboration with Oro 11 under the name Banana Clipz. They’re both fire and Boima promises a trip out here in the summer so get familiar.

So after playing New York Tropical and Rubulad back to back, I’m looking forward to another fun weekend, this time with a lot less work.  On Friday night, the ZZK crew from Argentina touches down in Williamsburg for a show at Union Pool. If Billyburg isn’t your hood you can also catch them saturday on the soundsytem at Santos Playhouse in manhattan which should be heavy on the bass end with those subs they have downstairs. If I’m understanding correctly the ZZK at Santos thing is an early show, from 7-11pm so after el guiso en Santos,  we’re heading over to catch the AFRIKA party at Le Poisson Rouge.

FRIDAY

ZZK @ Union Pool  (8:00pm – 11:55pm) 484 Union Ave  (L train to Lorimer)

ZZK Records is a homegrown, artists’ collective launched recently out of Buenos Aires, Argentina. ZZK Records evolved from Zizek Club, the weekly party in Palermo, capital of South American hip, where visiting artists and resident deejays attract consistent crowds of global, street music fans. At Zizek, cumbia gets thrown in a sonic blender with minimal electronica, dancehall, reggaeton and dub mashups, and original beats.
“Zizek’s a cornerstone of the fast-rising cumbia scene, packing in crowds with music that can perhaps be best described as the ultimate mash-up of underground Latin club sounds: reggaetón and dancehall bleeding into ghettotech and hip-hop, with traditional and electronic dance beats swirling around the whole hot, boiling stew.” -SF Weekly

SATURDAY

ZZK @ Santos Party House (96 Lafayette St 7:00pm – 11:00pm)

Fauna, Douster, and El G take Manhattan!

On Saturday April 4, Zizek Club jets into the Big Apple to headline at Santos Party House. They’ll be bringing their sonic blender of cumbia mixed with a dash of electronica, dancehall, reggaeton, and a ton of original beats. Guaranteed to have a down right fun time dancing your back parts off.

THE AFTER PARTY

DJ Ayo’s Global Low Frequency @ Le Poisson Rouge

Themselves – Rapping 4 Money (ft. Why, Odd Nosdam, and cLOUDDEAD)

from theFREEhoudini mixtape

Themselves are currently on tour and performing in Brooklyn this Friday.  I’ve never seen Doseone (or any of the Anticon crew) perform live. But I must say as an artist, Doseone is an unrestricted creative force. And the world of underground hiphop is/was too restricted for his drive, so he’s constantly pushing boundaries. “Rapping4Money” is enchanting, accessible, even with the intricate rhymes and rhythm patterns.  We still get the psychological complexities and ambiguities (which is also why I appreciate and enjoy works by Dose/Jel/and some of the anticon cats.)

When mics is hung in these times of crisis…

One of my favorite lines from Dose – “You can tell a lot about a man from the sound of his music…/Anyways, yours is hollow-sounding” -  and it’s by no means one of the best or most intriguing lines from Dose or even from that particular track “Good People Check” (“From underground to mainstream, pioneers to fireplace rap/This is the voice of our rage/Come see me, I’ll serve you, give you free music, and step!/It was nothing!/I did it just to save our rep!”)

Recession Rap JamsIn these times of economic crisis

If you’re interested in hearing even more fresh, happening, avant-garde rap ish, here’s some new wayne + even more new wayne, along w/ T-Pain and Juelz co-starring.

Midrange wobble hooligan Rusko breaks down some of his dubstep production methods on YouTube.  He goes through in a pretty detailed way talking about how to program the shuffled beats in dubstep, how to make wobble bass, how to mix beats and general production process stuff.  I like his music although I imagine there are a lot of dubstep people who will think he’s bastardizing the scene since the stuff he makes is very main-floor friday night mass appeal dubstep.  I like it although I think there will be a lot of people coming behind him trying to make ‘banging dubstep’ and making a lot of horrible music, like what happened with d’n’b after Ed Rush & Optical introduced the whole No U Turn techstep sound.  Regardless though, whatever style you’re making, if you’re trying to make powerful beat based music he is giving away a lot of good knowledge here.  Respect to him for pulling back the curtain.  Real producers who are confident in themselves don’t need to keep ‘production secrets’.

Thanks to everyone who came out on Friday to NY Tropical 4, it was CRAZYYYYYYYYY.  I’m so happy that we were able to bring together everyone on that bill, Geko, Andy, Kingdom, Esau, Mariana all KILLED IT.  It was one of the best parties I’ve played at or been at in a long time.  Here’s a selection of pics from the night, thanks Lamin, Jean and Andy for taking these.
