Big tune from Wiley’s forthcoming album. The beat is by Shy FX which apparently was a remix that became the main mix. Very nice house/old school hiphop something or other vibes. Wiley in top form as always, picked up from Marcus Visionary’s blog where there’s lots of other good stuff.

THIS POSTMODERNIST STRANGER
“Let us imagine a man who stumbles into an alien ritual in its closing stages when the devotees are winding down to a concluding chorus of amens, and who immediately and enthusiastically takes up the singing with such loudness and gusto that the owners of the ritual stop their singing and turn, one and all, to look in wonder at this postmodernist stranger. Their wonder increases tenfold when they ask the visitor later what kind of modernism his people had had, and it transpires that neither he nor his people have ever heard the word modernism.” – Achebe, Home and Exile

From the incredible album Midtown 120 Blues by DJ Sprinkles (aka Terre Thaemlitz) which the always fascinating Word The Cat put us up on several months back. That photograph of Tina Turner is what comes to mind now when I hear this track. Perhaps because the image (that expression) of Tina Turner (from the Brooklyn Museum exhibition Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present) is somewhat similar to the Midtown 120 Blues artwork, or perhaps because whenever this track comes up I’m always on the A train looking at an ad of the aforementioned photographic exhibition.

NASTY SPEAKS
Real talk from one of my favorite DJs in the UK Funky scene. In this interview by Blackdown Marcus Nasty speaks out in his traditional opinionated way about why he thinks the grime scene died and the way forward for UK Funky which he has become one of the leading DJs in. I enjoy Marcus sets because as a fellow post-grime person he is playing house but keeping it raw. I love the new UK funky sounds and have been playing a lot of it and find that it is even leading me into some of the smoother stuff but basically I still like raw, percussive, heavy tunes. Getting into a lot of what people think of as ‘normal house’ is just too far for me and a lot of the DJs coming from there into funky play too smooth for me. Marcus has (or has had, he’s sounding a little more mature now) a rep for being a big muscle-y dude who will beat you up and you can tell he’s pretty unconcerned about offending anyone which lends a certain truthiness to this interview.
IT’S OUR TIME
Jahdan Blakkamoore feat. 77Klash & Spoek Mathambo – Dem Nuh Like It
Here’s another cut from the BAZOOKA SHOT mixtape, produced by the man Shadetek. This is New York Tropical, Bashment Hype, Dutty House… Brooklyn-Kingston-Johannesburg, serious and ugly!
HIVIP STATUS
Just got this from Spoek. The last one was so baddd I haven’t even heard this but I figure I better fling it up here quick so you all can listen and enjoy simultaneously. Mr. Mathambo was on a deep-south-african funky township haunted house vibe last time. OK I listened. This one sounds like your mama getting daggered by a skeleton in a fly outfit, under  very  slow  strobe  lights. Ugh, it’s disgusting. I think I’m sick.
Spoek sez:
“ON THIS EXTRA SPECIAL MIX DEDICATED TO MY FRIEND, I HAVE PUT IN A LOT OF THE SUPER CRUCIAL SUPER IMPORTANT NEW MUSIC I HAVE BEEN MAKING AS MOLEKE MBEMBE AND SLUSH PUPPY KIDS. I WANT YOU TO ENJOY YOURSELF.
LOVE

GET DRUNK AND LOSE YOUR PHONE
Â
New DJ mix from me, Matt Shadetek, that I put together to promote our party next Friday Mar. 27th at Glasslands in Brooklyn. The mix is called “Get Drunk and Lose Your Phone”, which is precisely what I expect you to come out and do with us next week. Don’t worry, you’ll get another one and probably find that cute girl’s number again, maybe. I included tracks from Kingdom and Uproot Andy who will both be playing, along with some stuff by me of course. The first tune is a brand new exclusive 4×4 Tropical remix of The Dream’s “Rockin’ That Shit” that I just made. I love The Dream, his new album is great and is apparently doing really well. If you had told me a few years ago I would be listening to and making housey R+B I would have laughed in your face. Ha! Here we are in 2009. Anyway, enjoy the mix, it’s the third installment in our Dutty Artz Podcast, following Lamin’s Recession Rap Mix.

SKANK!

This tune is ill, sort of African funky grime. The video is a class of kids learning the steps to the dance that goes with it, and then making up their own. Thanks to Kingdom for putting me onto this one via his mix for Lower End Spasm, which will be out soon. Apparently the sample is Nigerian. Anyone know what they’re saying? Never heard of the guys who made it, called Fr3e, but it’s wicked.
BYE HATERS
Photo of Jahdan by Amir EbrahimiÂ
New dutty house 140bpm bassline remix of Jahdan’s Go Round Payola, by me, Matt Shadetek up now. I picked up the tempo and added that bassline whizz and squelch for maximum 3AM drunk bouncing. It’s the Bye Haters mix, free download exclusive for RCRDLBL, fuck with it.

LVIS SIGHTED IN MOTEL WITH BIGFOOT MAKING HOUSE MUSIC
Not really, but he has a good mix up. If you liked Bok Bok’s mix from a while back you’ll dig this mix from fellow Night Slug L-Vis 1990. Sort of a swampy take on UK Funky house, with lots of dubplates. I like it.
THIS IS THE KIND OF HOUSE I CAN MOVE WITH
Hard House Banton – Sirens vs. Busy Signal – Step Out
Because it’s got Busy Signal mashed up on it. I think this is a blend by DJ Spliffman, the riddim is BAD on it’s own too. Check out Spliffman’s YouTube page, a bunch of wicked Funky on there.
Riddim: Hard House Banton – Sirens

This shit reminds me of old grime, in the best possible way and has the added bonus that normal people actually could probably dance to this. I am excited about slowing down.
BOKBOKBOKBOKBOK
Alex BokBok has a new short mix up to promote his Night Slugs night coming up Friday in LDN. The first tune is just listed as ‘intro’ which makes me think it’s by him. It’s sick. He mixes into Donaeo’s ‘Party Hard’ which I’m feeling, especially his little “eh!”s in the beginning. Someone has been listening to The Dream. Me too Donaeo, me too. This is a cool little quick intro into the UK Funky House sound since Alex isn’t playing a lot of the really horribly cheesy stuff that gets played in this genre too. I really like the vibe of a lot of Funky but sometimes it just swerves off into horrible cocktail house and it’s suddenly just all too much and I have to stop.
“This Friday, 30 January, Night Slugs returns for a one-off at Egg in King’s Cross where they will be playing host to DJsets from Kode9, Mak 10, Dubplate Malice and Dress 2 Sweat’s Jackmaster. “

MSANZI HOUSE
is what I typed into YouTube and found these. Spoek Mathambo’s mix a while ago inspired me to go and look for some of this weird slow house that they make in South Africa. Some of it is really cool, and the videos are great. Like this one:

And you can’t go wrong sampling Yo Yo Ma:

In my mind I think of this as snaredrum house, because of the snare patterns, which people often say ‘soca’ to talk about it. This really doesn’t sound like soca at all but it DOES sound a lot like what they’re calling Funky in London, especially the beats. Anyway I like it. I feel like the recent changes in house have made it a lot more interesting and fun and I might now go and try to make some, we’ll see. I almost never work at 120bpm which is kinda what makes it appealing to me.
And WTF is this?:

MIX MEDICINES
Spoek Mathambo, our favorite fashion genius / faith healer / rapper, just sent me some heat from Jo’burg.
“mr jace-o-matic…i am really getting into djing now…playing house from south africa…finding gems…thought i should spread some cheer…”
NYC is covered in snow now which is pretty but will soon be gray sludge, plus 3 friends of mine have all been laid off in the last 4 weeks. Life sucks! Although I expect the party scene will improve as crazed desperation spreads.
so here’s some nu house jams from South Africa, where it is SUMMER, thnx 2 Spoek, aka half of Sweat X and half of Playdoe. We played together in Paris and the Playdoe set was a definite highlight of 2008, it was LIVE.
