Back in November 2015, Chief Boima (in his role as Africa is a Country’s managing editor) curated three panels at the Pan African Space Station‘s library-of-people installation at the Performa 15 Hub in New York City. AIAC invited Dutty Artz’ DJ Ushka, York College Professor and writer Rishi Nath, and AIAC’s photo editor Zachary Rosen to host three podcasts on behalf of Africa is a Country.

The Ghana dance that’s been wildly popular for the past few years continues to result in a lot of good music. The beat that’s generally associated with it is a super dancey and effective pop formula blended with traditional Ga drumming. Who made the first beat is up for debate, but E.L‘s “U Go Kill Me” is what brought it to the masses.
I’m still surprised I don’t hear more of this in US club sets outside of African nights. It’s impossible not to move your body to, has high production standards, and a lot of the lyrics are even in English. Maybe it’s because so few Western artists are producing it? The UK has Fuse ODG bringing it to the Grime crowds and the whole Afrobeats thing is probably helping to spread it over there. But there’s not much of an American counterpart to any of that. Not that any of this matters as a symbol of the sound’s success, I just personally fuck with it and would like to hear more of it.
So let’s go over a few recent tracks that are doing pretty well that I like a lot:

Two months ago, I sat down with Mandip Kalsi to talk about New York’s party scene, building community through music, and the move of his Philly-based Dutty Chutney party to New York. Mandip, one of the resident deejays of Dutty Chutney expressed the intention of the party as a place to blend a variety of genres from the Caribbean to South Asia, electronic to bhangra, soca to reggae, and dancehall to hard-hitting bass. Already known in Philadelphia, we discussed how the move was the opportunity for DC to push the envelope with new guest DJs and add new flavor to New York’s nightlife.
I’d never been to DC while it was in Philly, so I got the chance to check it out last month when the homie, Geko Jones, guest deejayed the first DC in Brooklyn. Currently hosted at The Cove, I saw the music attract a diverse crowd, one that in my experience is sometimes difficult to bring out to that part of Williamsburg.
And so we’ve been talking about how to keep creating a space that attracts and challenges new crowds, and how to keep growing Dutty Chutney as it finds its niche in New York.
This Friday, guest DJ, Beto (iBomba) tears it up with residents Mandip and M-Ski. As the host of the iBomba, I’ll definitely say you don’t want to miss this Dutty Chutney vs. iBomba clash – future dancehall, future bass, future everything.
