Our last release, the Calling All Girls Remix EP, featured a remix by DJ and producer Kush Arora. In his interpretation of the Robzilla produced original, he came with his signature dark-industrial sound. This is the same sound that really left an impression on us last year when he sent over his remix of Gyptian’s Wine Slow, and we decided to release it on our Six Years Deep anniversary compilation. Now having put out two of his remixes, we’ve decided to release a Kush Arora original, the Rasta Azonto Riddim, which will be out tomorrow on all your favorite digital stores! (more…)
This year has been a year of expansion & experimentation for me (DJ Ripley), from the chance to play Lincoln Center with Ushka, Dutty Artz/Kafundo collaborators Buraka Plays Som and Charanjit Singh, to my new gig as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Business at NYU. I’ve also been branching out creatively, with new collaborations in the works in production/remixing (more on that forthcoming), and this week, a new live performance experience – I will be performing a live DJ set with amazing drummer/percussionist/beatmaker Ravish Momin. He is an esteemed jazz drummer and Indian percussionist who has toured across the world alongside many free jazz greats as well as with multiple iterations of his own band, Tarana.

For my Brooklyn heads, I’m doing a party tonight, Tuesday 10.21 at my favorite little Bed-Stuy spot, BedVyne Brew. The theme is: a film noir set in 2075 Johannesburg. The homie Teleseen and I are spinning African tunes of the darker variety. So if you want a chance to hear Gqom mixed with Kuduro, and other heavy Afro-House bits stop by.
For the past decade some of my favorite House music has come from the African continent, and things just continue to evolve. When I was hipped to the “Gqom†scene that’s been bubbling in Durban I was hooked. (more…)

We have a little internal record pool going on over here at Dutty Artz that is too good to keep to ourselves. So I’m going to kick off what should be a regular series called “Inside the Dutty Pool” with my own selection from the month of September: (more…)
Ebola has been weighing heavily on my mind. From it hitting Ashoka, a friend who I met in Liberia in 2011 (and who’s attended Dutty Artz parties), to worrying about friends and family on the ground in both Sierra Leone and Liberia, I feel sort of stuck and unable to help while being in Brazil. However in the face of a seeming panic in the U.S. about the disease invading the country, and rehashed African stereotypes in the mainstream media, I find I can contribute something by writing… (more…)
