Petrona Martinez – La Vida Vale La Pena

Petrona Martinez inherited a strong singer’s tradition from Bullerengue, an Afro-Colombian dance rhythm born during the African fight for freedom from slavery and originally sung solely by pregnant women confined to their homes and thus unable to attend village dances. The melodies were passed down through the generations. She learned them from her grandmother and great-grandmother as they sang while doing daily tasks and attending Patron Saints Festivals. She is now passing them to her sons and daughters…

Uproot Andy was inspired and made a great version of the song (especially sharp and on point – always kills the dance!) This was released by Bersa Discos and buyable here.  I was going to post this prior to last Thursday’s megaparty, but here it is now –

Jahdan Blakkamoore – Never Gonna Stop (produced by Matt Shadetek & DJ /rupture)

from BAZOOKA SHOT mixtape, which is coming next week. Jahdan sounds incredible, and very smooth. Matt & Jace are on some old skool grime ting w/ this riddim.  Some of the elements in it reminded me of Eskiboy around 2003-05. The tune also has a great slow down dancehall grind, lighters in the air vibes too.

BUZZROCK WARRIOR coming this September!

I somehow (mis)managed to have three mixes out in as many weeks. The first is the ferocious dubwise cyclone “DefinatelyMaybe”, the second “Batture” is a more humid affair… think lemonade, roux sticks and cicadas screeching in open lots on the West bank.

I stirred up “Batture” for Dave Qualm- the man behind the wonderfully personal blog It’s After the End of the World… It is the inaugural mix in a new series he’s curating- make sure to give him a visit- with features like his ‘Chicago Ghetto House Primer’ you wont be disappointed.

Sometime next week the final gust of this onslaught “Heavy Sick” will be dropping…. If you happen to be in Budapest on the 23rd @ A38 or in Berling the 24th @ Maria Terrasse don’t forget to stay hydrated!

i saw a hummingbird floating with its super-fast wings in the flowers outside of Matt Shadetek’s apartment building last October. Zuzuka Poderosa is from Brazil, and she is powerful.

Eddie Stats just upped some much needed, dancefloor grazing blends of works/riddims by Jahdan (longside di man call Shadetek) & Klash over at his FADER Ghetto Palms column. Ghislain Poirier, Face T, Busy Signal, Sizzla, and the legendary Sugar Minnott are all included in the package. Hurry on over there to listen and download.

papoose

About two years ago, Papoose was a promising, young rapper with heavy street buzz (countless mixtapes, hot97-radio love, magazine/blog exposure, etc.) and a 1.5 million dollar record deal in the works with Jive Records.  Well, the deal fell through, and Pap bragged on subsequent tapes that he kept the 1.5 million from the label, but plans for his debut album The Nacirema Dream never actually materialized. Pap has been releasing mixtapes (and greatest hits from his previous tapes) and newer bits/leaks surfaced every now and then. On this particular track, he’s disgruntled, disgusted with the whole music industry and he’s letting his feelings known, keeping it one hundred/real (as “real” as rappers can keep it anyway.)

Playaz Circle – Hold Up

I found this one on my desktop. Playaz Circle with (insert big name/famous rapper) is usually pretty good, but this is the first time I’m hearing the group without Lil Wayne, Ludacris, or OJ Da Juiceman and it’s surprisingly nice.

octa push

I got put up on Octa Push by the hospitable folks of Bristol’s finest BassMusic/Karnival crew Ruffnek Diskotek. After a massive fry up we were listening to some tunes and Octa Push stood out as some serious heat… A few internet mediated communications later- and we have a brief and incredibly straight forward interview direct for DA from the Iberian peninsula.

Who is Octa Push?
We’re two brothers, Dizzycutter and Mushug and we both have been making beats for a while but only started making them together in the beginning of 2008. Started a bit like a joke when our friends at Conspira (one of the first crews pushing bass music in Portugal) booked us for a show. We had to find a name and make loads of beats, it went well and then we decided to take it a bit more seriously. Since then things been moving really fast and we’ve been lucky to play in wicked places!
We did official remixes for people like Buraka Som Sistema, Débruit, Mochipet, Monkey Steak and more..
Our sound has it’s main influences UK garage, bashment, techno, afrobeat and loads of diferent things..

What sort of gear are you working on?
We produce with Cubase SX, lots of VST’s and Midi Controllers.
Thinking on getting some Hardware.
For Live Act we use Ableton Live + 2 Mac’s and 2 MPD24

What are your plans for this upcoming year?
We’re going to release an original 12′ with 3 tracks. 1 with MC Zulu (ninja tune) + 1 with Portuguese/Cape Verde MC Toni Clean.
It will come out on Iberian Records.
Other releases for Steakhouse and a couple of remixes for Civil Music and Enchufada..
We’re thinking of making an album aswell.

Whose pushing the Iberian Sound ?
Iberian sound is blowing up with people like Mr Gasparov, Relocate, Cardopusher, Das Nevez, Buraka Som Sistema, A.m.o.r., DJ Manaia, Batida and more…

Who else are you feeling?
In a bass heavy music tip Bristol is always on the map, producers like Joker, Monkey Steak, Gemmy, Guido, Slugabed are great!
Also guys like Starkey, Dorian Concept, Bullion, L-Vis1990, Debruit, Brackles, Untold are making amazing music at the moment..
Bands like Puscifer, Animal Collective.. blabla we hate listing!

Here’s a tune for  your crates- adroit vocal slicing with lumbering low end beast dragging everything forward with sideways time precision.

DJ TOTAL FREEDOM & NGUZUNGUZU host a weekly party in LA called Wildness. It transforms Tuesday nights into fun dancing mayhem. I played a few months back and suddenly I heard 808 kicks that weren’t in the track. I look up – Total Freedom is banging a drum machine… and

1. it wasn’t annoying!! i can’t imagine ANY other scenario where someone uninvited starts drumming on top of my DJing, but somehow this was alright & even kinda cool.

&

2. it’s hard to create a space of freedom, even in the club world, so it was great to drop in on their scene.

But we don’t have a car OR live in LA. So it’s good that TF & NG are in New York City for Kingdom‘s birthday party this Friday @ Glasslands, also with Maluca. Exciting! Listen to my radio show tonite for tix giveaways! While we wait, here’s a mix they did for the occasion:

Chief Boima will be joining DJ Rupture, on what appears to be the 2nd anniversary of Mudd Up with DJ Rupture on WFMU this Monday, July 6th at 7PM. Chief Boima, an interesting, emerging voice in African diasporic music is based in San Francisco, California, where he organizes a weekly party Descendants United, and a monthly party The Highlife. He also produce music under his name, as well as in the groups Banana Clipz, Beaten By Them, and Chief y Chango. He will be discussing production influences and playing the sounds he’s currently into, everything from Ivorian Coupe Decale and Senegalese Hiphop and Mbalax to Nigerian Club, Angolan Kuduro, South African Kwaito, and the Sierra Leonean sounds he’s been specifically digging. Yeah, it’s a lot, so tune in!

Good friend and fellow bass fiend The Crooked Clef has the best taste of any of the  bloggers writing over at Trash Menagerie. He also does serious damage behind his Traktor pulled decks. He has  been putting out a semi-regular series called Trash in the Bassment-  check last edition’s tropical deluge for confirmation of the mans skills and taste. His latest goes all  house-y in that way that I get embarrassed about loving. But believe- this is a HEAVY HEAVY mix that I can imagine going off at Night Slugs or any of the other gutter house/heavy bass parties that you can find out in the wide wide world. Below find Vol VI

The Very Best feat. Ezra Kroeing – Warm Heart of Africa (Theophilus London Remix)

Theophilus London drop some Brooklyn wave on this new song from The Bery Best. As if you don’t already know, The Very Best are a fantastic outfit from Lilongwe, Malawi and London, Europe bringing you ghetto pop sweetness. I’m quite looking forward to their album, which should be coming out soon.

This is, how you say, my shit. Instinct, producer from De Tropix, made this mashup of Mavado’s hit So Blessed. Some people are saying ‘soca’ which seems to be everyone’s go to term for anything that is 4×4 with snares that aren’t straight on the upbeats. If you listen to soca you know that soca is FAST which this isn’t. Sounds kinda like Funky to me but with the sugary synths and Vado mashup I personally will be filing this under LDN Tropical. I like the graphic too but to really get there it needs more animals but that’s just me. Anyway, BAD.

que_bajo_la_farra_web2

This Friday, July 3rd – Quite Possibly the most fun I’ll have playing a show this summer. Every year La Farra NYC hosts the Vallenato on the River boat party and this year they’ve hooked up with Que Bajo?! to make sure the Afro Colombian heat gets represented as well. Here’s a peak at last year’s event.

LA’s Very Be Careful is coming in to tear and down the place with cumbia and vallenato vibes while Uproot Andy and myself hold it down with even more Afro-Caribbean basshead vibes. There are a limited amount of tickets left you can buy them here. There will only be 25 tix available at the dock.

Now here’s a treat we’ve been playing since spring

Forthcoming from Ku Bo.
