This coming Sunday, July 27th at 5PM, Dutty Fam Ripley and Ushka are stepping up to the decks at Lincoln Center for Globalfest’s Lincoln Center Out of Doors. The line-up also features electronic Bollywood Raga musician Charanjit Singh who is making his U.S debut and BaianaSystem, who appear on the recent Kafundo Vol. 1 compilation. Passinho, the new wave of Youtube fueled funk dancing from Rio, is making its way to New York City. I missed Na Batalha, the musical about the growth of the dance movement amongst Carioca youth, when it premiered in Rio this past June. This Sunday I’m presenting the Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner at the Bang On A Can Marathon in lower Manhattan. The event is free. The lineup is stellar. We go on in late afternoon right after the incredible Meredith Monk! (Eastman sang on Monk’s Dolmen Music) Other performers include Jherek Bischoff, Roomful of Teeth, So Percussion. Info.
Geko Jones and I are making our NY stop on the Africa Latina tour this Thursday at Superfine in Dumbo. This is the unofficial after party for Celebrate Brooklyn at Brooklyn Bridge Park, featuring the Sierra Leone Refugee Allstars, OkayAfrica, DJ Underdog, and myself earlier that evening. (more…)
I was asked by the Crown Heights Mediation Center whether Dutty Artz would be interested in supporting a community-led block party initiative called the “Arts to End Violence Festival” on Kingston Ave and of course the answer was an absolute yes. The Mediation Center is a community organization that provides a variety of services to create a healthier and safer neighborhood for everyone, with one of their primary focuses being gun violence prevention. One of their projects, called Save Our Streets (S.O.S) works to reduce shootings and killings and works to mobilize the neighborhood. (more…)
